Lowell MassachusettsThe Basics

With locations in the Boston suburbs of Tewksbury and in Lowell, Massachusetts, Janet’s Place provides sober living for women in early recovery. In safe and structured homes, the women learn to employ the 12 steps in their lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Tewksbury house is comprised of two white shingled homes adjoined by a one-story wing. The house accommodates ten women. There are two double-occupancy rooms, one triple-occupancy and one single. The house includes a spacious living room with cable TV, and a fully equipped kitchen with an adjacent dining nook.

The Lowell residence, a quaint blue-shingled Cape Cod style house, has a nine-bed capacity, and includes one triple-occupancy room and three doubles. Lowell has three full bathrooms, two common areas and a fully equipped kitchen. A typical double at Lowell includes baby blue walls, an old fashioned armoire, twin beds topped with turquoise blue comforters, a nightstand and hanging artwork.

At Janet’s Place, the women are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. The pantry food is available for the women to share. No energy drinks are allowed, and women are asked to label their food and drinks. Amenities include laundry facilities, cable TV, house computers with Wi-Fi. House managers live on the premises. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only. Both locations of Janet’s Place are in close proximity to public transportation.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must complete an application, which is followed by an interview. Potential clients must have a minimum of 14 days clean and sober, prior to arrival. Those who don’t have the minimum sobriety requirements are referred to a local residential treatment or detox facility. After they complete treatment, they can apply for a stay at Janet’s Place. Upon arrival, the women must formulate a recovery plan, which includes finding and working with a sponsor, obtaining a local home group and working the steps.

Other requirements include attending three outside 12-step meetings, being at the Monday and Wednesday night in-house speaker meetings, performing household chores, and maintaining decent, respectable behavior. Clients must find work, perform community service or attend school. The only visitors allowed at Janet’s Place include guest speakers, sponsors and staff. Sponsors can visit between the houses of 7 am and 9 pm, seven days a week. Overnight guests are forbidden. Other prohibited behaviors include intimate relations between residents, theft and abusive behavior.

The curfew is 9 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 10 pm Fridays and Saturdays. Residents who are running late must notify staff. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse have 30 minutes to vacate the premises. They are eligible to reapply for residency after a two-week period, provided that they have gone to a residential treatment facility.

Extras

Janet’s Place is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Sober Housing (MASH), which stresses high standards from its affiliates.

The 30-day cost is $600, and the move-in cost is $500, which includes the first two weeks’ rent, and a non-refundable $200 application fee. The women can pay their rent on a monthly, weekly or bi-weekly basis.

In Summary

Janet’s Place offers newly clean and sober women a chance to work a comprehensive 12-step program, while they rebuild their lives. The quaint houses are adorable, and clients are apt to feel comfortable here. For women in the Boston area seeking a safe and cozy environment for rebuilding their lives, this is a great great choice.
