Addiction Canada Outpatient

The Basics

Addiction Canada is one of largest and longest running substance abuse treatment facilities throughout Canada offering non 12-step and evidence-based treatment programs. The outpatient and outreach facility of Toronto provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and aftercare that is individualized and client centered. Treatment is available to men and women are 18 and older who are struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Typically a majority of clients coming to the outpatient facility are coming out of residential treatment programs, either through Addiction Canada or elsewhere, and are looking for maintenance and aftercare services. Though some clients simply cant take the time away from their families or work to attend an inpatient program. In either case, the staff conducts a thorough assessment and develops a treatment plan for each client. The unique aspect to this outpatient program is clients are able to create their own schedules.

The programs are offered in blocks, meaning three hours or more of group therapy. The IOP can be up to nine hours of programming per week, while the step-down outpatient programs can only be once or twice a week. Individual sessions are offered usually once per week for about an hour. Treatment includes a CBT approach with elements of the 12 steps, which is described as the Addiction Canada Empowerment Program, or ACE. This program is a solution-based approach that incorporates some parts of the 12-steps but with an emphasis on personal accountability. There is also focus on clients identifying triggers and coping skills, as well as learning to make healthy choices.

The staff at the outpatient treatment facility includes therapists with many years of experience working in the addiction field and with accredidations that include LCSWs, psychologists and LPCs.

Extras

Family and couples therapy is offered, along with a 10 month long after care program. There are also sober coaching services available.

In Summary

Addiction Canada, while its methods and facilities have had some controversial moments, does offer some alternative views on addiction and treatment. The unique treatment options and success rates have proven it to be a helpful and effective program.
