The Basics
Founded in 2003, Harmony House for Women was originally located in Miami. Now known as Harmony on the Beach, this sober living offers women in recovery a structured environment in Hollywood Beach, Florida. While their approach is mainly 12-step based, they also offer weekly relapse prevention groups. Harmony on the Beach is in the same location as Cleveland House, a sober living home for men.
Accommodations and Amenities
Harmony on the Beach accommodates up to 29 women in a beachfront property that was previously a motel. Three clients are grouped in studio apartments that include a kitchenette and bathroom. Residents are responsible for purchasing their own groceries and preparing their own meals. Amenities include a heated outdoor swimming pool, Wi-Fi, Direct TV, a laundry facility, barbeque area, vending machines and access to computers. Coffee is free. The house manager lives on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
Residents must have 30 days of sobriety prior to arrival. A preliminary drug and alcohol urine screening is conducted. The minimum commitment of time required is four months. For the first seven days, the curfew is 10 pm. After the initial week, the curfew is 11:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 1:30 am Fridays and Saturdays.
Harmony on the Beach is a 12-step based community. Upon arrival, clients must find sponsors and obtain jobs. Weekly requirements include attending six 12-step meetings and an in-house meeting, working the steps, completing daily chores and maintaining employment. On a weekly basis, a licensed clinician conducts a mandatory relapse prevention group on the premises.
Harmony on the Beach works closely with local businesses and provides employment referrals to clients suitable for those establishments. Harmony on the Beach also has affiliations with a non-profit organization, Harmony Care Foundation which helps clients with life skills such as continuing an education, finding a job, budgeting finances and other money management techniques.
Random drug and alcohol tests are conducted. Harmony on the Beach has a zero tolerance policy for those testing positive. They are evicted from the house immediately. The move-in cost is $430, which includes one week’s rent, one week’s security deposit and a $60 administrative fee. The 30-day cost is $740, but rent is paid on a weekly basis.
Extras
Harmony Care Foundation’s director is a licensed physician who provides office visits and limited health care. While the office visits are free of charge, medications and medical tests are provided at additional cost.
Since this sober living is right on the beach, residents are provided with the opportunity for a plethora of recreational activities including bike riding, swimming, or just soaking up the Florida sun.
Residents attending outpatient treatment at a drug rehab are provided with free transportation.
In Summary
While not advertised nor discussed, Harmony on the Beach sports the same address as Cleveland House, a male-sober living community. For clients seeking affordable 12-step sober living right by the beach, this might work. However, for women seeking a facility that is completely gender-specific this might be not suitable, because it appears that the facility also accommodates men in close proximity to the women.
