The Basics
Dr. Julian S. Pickens is the founder of ISA Intervention Services of Arizona in Tempe, Arizona and has organized and held over 2,000 interventions. He is nationally licensed by the Association of Intervention Specialists as well as in Arizona as an independent substance abuse counselor, in addition to being a MFT. Pickens conducts family, adolescent and executive interventions helping alcoholics, substance abusers, gamblers and those with eating disorders.
The Background
After 26 years of working for the Valley Hope Association, Pickens retired to complete his post-doctoral work at the School of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University in 1975. While there, he trained under the “father” of modern intervention: Dr. Vernon Johnson. Since then, as the founder of ISA, Dr. Pickens has been helping families across the United States give their loved ones the chance to choose and enter recovery.
The Approach
Dr. Pickens’ ISA procedure begins with a complimentary consultation session with the concerned parties to determine whether intervention is in fact appropriate for the potential client. These consultations can take place over the phone or in person at the ISA offices. They may include several family members, friends and colleagues.
Services include helping the intervention team and the concerned party potentially choose the appropriate treatment center (if they choose to continue into treatment) while also matching treatment options to the client’s family’s financial capabilities and sobriety goals.
Post-Intervention and In Summary
Pickens’ purview extends to helping make any necessary travel arrangements and preparing family, friends and/or co-workers for each stage of the intervention, as well as conducting the intervention itself. He continues to work with the concerned parties while the client is in treatment. In cases where clients are having particular difficulties, Pickens offers a backup plan in case of relapse.
