The Basics
Located in Bakersfield, California, Legacy Village provides a sober living community for men and women. Their mission is to provide safe and structured homes, as well as help clients connect to local 12-step groups, faith-based services and other recovery programs.
Accommodations and Amenities
Legacy Village has two locations, including Oregon Street Recovery Center that features six fully furnished apartments. Each townhouse style apartment includes two bedrooms, one bathroom and a spacious kitchen that has cabinets, a stove and refrigerator. The gender-specific apartments each accommodate four clients. The dorm-style facility in Alta Vista accommodates 30 men. Each room houses between two and four clients. Rooms are furnished with bunk beds, nightstands and a dresser. The building includes three living areas, that have comfortable couches, and flat screen TV’s.
At Legacy Village, clients are responsible for their own groceries. Meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and all utilities, kitchen cleaning supplies, dish soap, and toilet paper. Staff lives on the premises at both locations.
Rules and Regulations
Upon arrival, clients must have undergone detox, and pass an alcohol and drug screening. At Legacy Village, certain medications including Suboxone, and Methadone are not allowed on the premises. Other medications must include forms signed by the prescribing physician, and be approved by staff. All medications are locked on the facility, and distributed between 8 am and 6 pm on a daily basis.
Weekly requirements for residents include acquiring a sponsor within 14 days of arrival, participating in a minimum of two recovery meetings, including 12-step or Celebrate Recovery and being at the monthly community meeting. Additionally, residents must clean their personal spaces on a daily basis, participate in a weekly Double Scrub cleaning event, and conduct themselves in a respectable manner. Clients seeking alternative recovery support groups must have their requests approved by staff.
At Legacy Village, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who test dirty must adhere to a 30-day blackout with limited excursions, as well as attend 30 meetings in 30 days. A second relapse includes a 60-day blackout with other restrictions, and a third relapse includes immediate eviction from the premises. After 30 days, the client must pass an alcohol and drug screening prior to re-entry. There is a zero tolerance policy for residents who fail to take alcohol and drug screenings. They must leave the premises immediately, and are not allowed to return for 30 days. At that time, they must test clean.
The curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Residents are not allowed to leave the premises prior to 6 am seven days a week. Also, all clients must sign in and sign out, upon entering or leaving their homes.
Extras
Legacy Village organization plans to expand and open an outpatient treatment facility called Legacy Outpatient Services in the summer of 2016.
In Summary
At Legacy Village, residents participate in many events together including cooking out, participating in recreational activities and developing a strong sense of camaraderie, which is healing for those in recovery. For clients looking for a tightly knit sober living community, Legacy Village might be a great match.
