Freedom House

The Basics

Founded in 1999 by Helen Maloney in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Freedom House provides sober living for men and women in various stages of recovery. Maloney, who has been clean and sober for 18 years, established Freedom House because she lost her first husband to heroin addiction and that moved her to help others. The Freedom House organization is comprised of six houses, including two highly structured recovery homes for newcomer women, and four other gender-specific sober living houses for men and women who have a minimum of six months of sobriety. Besides Bucks County, Freedom House has a house in Philadelphia.

Accommodations and Amenities

Freedom House accommodates a total of 47 clients in quaint single-family homes. There is space for 11 men and 36 women. Furnishings are eclectic, ranging from hanging modern artwork to country-style décor. Three of the houses that cater to clients with more clean and sober time have single rooms available, while the other houses accommodate newer clients in comfortable furnished double-occupancy rooms. One house has one triple-occupancy room.

Some basic foods are provided for four of the houses. Otherwise, clients are responsible for the remainder of their groceries. Meals are prepared in spacious, fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, laundry rooms, Wi-Fi and cable TV. Residential managers live on the premises of the recovery houses, while the other homes, which cater to those with more sobriety are peer led.

Rules and Regulations

The newcomers live in what the Freedom House organization refers to as recovery houses. These homes typically require a minimum of 30 days of clients being clean and sober. Other clients are accepted on a case-by-case basis, but all must have undergone detox, and pass an alcohol and drug screening prior to admittance.

Maloney mainly looks for clients who exhibit a strong desire and willingness to stay clean and sober, as well as work a 12-step program of recovery. Upon arrival, there is a two-week blackout period, and clients must attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days. After that time, they must attend between four and five weekly meetings. Residents must also get a home group and obtain a sponsor, as well as maintain an active working relationship with their sponsor and work on their steps. They must get jobs, and continue on their recovery during their stay. The curfew is midnight from Sundays to Thursday, and 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The sober houses are for clients who have a minimum of six months sobriety. The environment is less structured, and more peer led, but clients are expected to maintain their recovery protocols, as well as work, go to school or do other productive activities. At all Freedom House properties, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, to uphold the safety of the household. Residents who relapse are removed from the premises.

Freedom House focuses on the individual, and believes that willing residents have the ability to utilize 12-step tools to obtain productive and healthy lives. The houses all have a sense of unity, and there is a lot of camaraderie here. Freedom House is a wonderful option for clients seeking sober living in Pennsylvania. Some residents hail from out of state, as well. They do not like to disclose the exact addresses of the homes, for the safety and privacy of their clients.
