Counseling Services of LancasterThe Basics

Founded in 1974 as the Lancaster County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Counseling Services of Lancaster (CSL) is located Lancaster, South Carolina, which is a suburb of Charlotte. Today, the CARF accredited organization provides outpatient treatment to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Counseling Services of Lancaster begins with a phone assessment followed by an in-person intake with a counselor. There is usually a waiting list which ranges from days to weeks depending on the local need for treatment. Once an individual’s level of care is determined, he or she then works with counselors to determine an individualized treatment plan that fits both their needs and schedule. Counselors also work with clients to figure out a suitable payment schedule before beginning the program. If clients need more intensive treatment, counselors refer them to local detox or residential programs.

Counseling Services of Lancaster offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of group and individual therapy. Clients generally meet for groups three times a week, although length and intensity of the program varies depending on the individual needs of the client. The group meetings are offered in the mornings at 9 am, mid-day around noon and in the evenings around 5:30 pm. Each group meeting lasts for two to three hours and is comprised of both education and sharing. The group sizes vary but are generally around 10 to 12 clients. Occasionally, outside speakers from local support groups and employment agencies present during the group meetings. Individual meetings are available on a case-by-case basis.

Clients are strongly encouraged to attend outside AA or NA meetings while in the IOP and are provided with a local meeting directory. Counseling Services of Lancaster provides dual diagnosis support and offers both therapy and referral services to clients with co-occurring disorders.

CSL’s staff is comprised of a mixture of LPCs and NCACs.

Extras

Although Counseling Services of Lancaster does not have a formal family program, clients can request individual meetings with their counselor and family members. These meetings are aimed at addressing any codependency issues and educating the family on substance abuse.

Counselors occasionally call clients after they have left the program to check on them and make sure they are doing well. There isn’t a formal aftercare program, but clients are invited to return for groups or individual sessions if they wish. The counselors also strongly recommend clients continue to stay involved with 12-step recovery after completing formal treatment.

In Summary

Counseling Services of Lancaster offers a basic IOP for adult men and women. The flexible scheduling of group therapy allows for individuals to maintain personal, work and family commitments. The negotiable length of treatment as well as the option to return for additional help after program completion is an added benefit for anyone wanting to maintain long-term recovery.
