The Basics
St. Luke’s Hospital is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is part of UnityPoint Health, a national behavioral health organization with a network of locations throughout Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Among its myriad services, the facility provides outpatient treatment for chemical dependency and a variety of other behavioral health programs.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients take an initial evaluation to determine the treatment program best for them. Some clients may need medical detox to stabilize before continuing to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which relies primarily on the 12-step philosophy.
The IOP generally lasts for nine to 10 weeks, meeting three times a week with morning and evening slots available. Treatment is made up of individual and group therapy, as well as spirituality groups, recreational therapy and nutritional counseling. Group topics vary but often cover AA/NA concepts, healthy communication skills, anger and stress management and other related topics. Therapists use evidence-based modalities such as CBT, EMDR, exposure therapy, play therapy and art therapy.
The staff at St. Luke’s Hospital includes LCSWs, MFTs, physicians, psychiatrists, nutritionists, RNs, LISWs, LMHCs, spiritual guidance counselors and Master’s level technicians.
Extras
Once IOP is completed, clients continue on to 10 sessions of aftercare over a five-week period. These groups cover 15 hours of education and group therapy.
Because St. Luke’s is a full-service hospital, the facility also offers treatment for eating disorders, mental health counseling and some specialized services for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. For the latter, it has a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) geared exclusively towards mental illness.
Additional programs for teens and children include a children’s treatment program and its Adolescent LIFE program for anger management and social skills. The Teaching Interventions to Empower and Strengthen (TIES) program is a free early intervention program for kids six years old and under. Parents are also trained to help out in the classroom.
Other services include training and assistance for families planning interventions for a loved one.
In Summary
Like many behavioral health hospitals, St. Luke’s Chemical Dependency Services are primarily outpatient-based and include significant medical supervision. Treatment features a good balance of 12-step concepts and evidence-based care with a number of additional, specialized programs for clients of all ages. For those in the area, St. Luke’s Hospital is a strong resource worth considering for a number of behavioral health needs.
