The Basics
Opened in 1979, St. Luke’s Crittenton Children’s Center was Kansas City’s first psychiatric hospital for children. Clients ages four to 18 are welcome to receive treatment through a range of medical and behavioral health programs. The substance abuse treatment options are offered on an outpatient basis.
Treatment and Staff
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) uses evidence-based practices, such as trauma-informed CBT, DBT, EMDR and Attachment, Self-regulation and Competency (ARC) and offers support for co-occurring disorders. The program’s philosophy is to address addiction on physical, psychological, social and spiritual levels using the Matrix Model.
Though each plan is individualized, treatment generally includes 10 hours of individual, family and group therapy a week. Though 12-step participation is not a required, clients are free to attend off-site meetings if they wish. The staff at Crittenton Children’s Center is extensive and includes board certified psychiatrists, RNs, physicians and Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
Once clients have completed treatment, they can continue on to an aftercare program, which is essentially a stepped down version of the above outpatient track. There’s also a residential treatment program available for clients with mental health issues.
Aside from IOP, there is a prevention program aimed at teens and consist primarily of developmental activities and parent and family events. Sessions focus on identifying risk factors and managing them as well as on building self-confidence and leadership while helping teens develop a sober network. Early intervention services are also available. Extensive case management services include helping clients in school, with the juvenile justice system or finding mental health providers and off-site support groups.
Other services include an spiritual guidance and counseling from an on-site chaplain, additional trauma programming and support and in-home services for children and families. The hospital also provides foster care and adoption services to nearby counties.
In Summary
St. Luke’s Crittenton Children’s Center is a robust facility offering the unique service of treating adolescents struggling with substance abuse, though it also has a bevy of other services to offer. Because of the organization’s strong medical oversight, those with a dual diagnosis are also well-served here.
