The Basics
The Chittenden Clinic of the Howard Center is a CARF-accredited, substance abuse treatment facility that was established in 2002. It was the first Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program offered in Burlington, Vermont. This outpatient facility provides evidence based treatment and counseling services for those who are opioid dependent and struggling co-occurring disorders, as well as medical care and case management for adults.
Treatment and Staff
After the initial, in person intake assessment, if the client qualifies for treatment at this facility an individualized treatment plan is implemented and a caseworker is assigned. Daily doses of either methadone or buprenorphine are provided, and every client has to closely monitored during the first phase, which includes two weekly meetings with a their assigned counselor and at least two drug tests a week. After a period of time, once the client has been stabilized, they are permitted to take home doses and are able to lessen the intensity and frequency of their program.
The treatment is built on a five level step down system, that requires frequent 12-step meetings, group and individual counseling, and for those with a dual diagnosis, regular sessions with an on-site psychiatrist. Monthly check-ins with individual therapists and monthly UAs are also required. There are group sessions available that are gender specific, as well as priority treatment given to pregnant women. Therapy methods vary from client to client, and may include CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) or EMDR. There are also psycho-educational groups available that include pregnancy prevention and HIV education.
A medical director who is a physician oversees these programs at the Chittenden Clinic; other staff include several LPNs and RNs, a Master’s-level LPC, addiction counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists.
Extras
In addition to substance abuse programming, the facility provides referrals and resources to their clients including medical services, insurance, transportation services, day care and housing.
In Summary
The services offered at the Chittenden Clinic are so valuable for their clients, as the need for MAT grows each year. From the time this facility opened in 2002 the number of yearly clients has nearly tripled, resulting in the need to open another facility, and both maintain a combined waiting list of over 200 names at any given time.
