HTC OutpatientThe Basics

Located in Benton Harbor, Michigan, 50 miles west of Kalamazoo, on the banks of Lake Michigan HTC Outpatient Services offers comprehensive substance abuse and behavioral health treatment for adults and adolescents. Using evidence-based therapies, clients can choose from a range of outpatient services including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), specialized group therapy, education and medication management. With individualized treatment plans and a well rounded approach to recovery, clients are in great hands.

Treatment and Staff

HTC offers a variety of treatments such as IOP, individual and group therapy, substance abuse education and medication management for opiate users. Depending on the client, some combination of these services may be recommended. Following an initial evaluation that takes a person’s biological, psychological, environmental and social needs into account, an individualized treatment plan is developed. This facility does not offer inpatient detox but they can provide referrals, if necessary.

The six-week adult IOP program offers a high level of support, meeting three times a week, for three hours at a time. Using primarily the Matrix Model, the program includes individual therapy once a week and a variety of groups. Topics may include relapse prevention, coping skills, early recovery skills and anger management. Therapeutic techniques such as CBT and DBT are also used frequently.

In addition to adult IOP, this facility offers a variety of specialized group therapy programs. The women’s life skills group meets once a week, for two hours. This gender-specific, nurturing setting covers topics such as relationships, self-esteem, journaling and personal goals. Clients typically continue with this program until they no longer deem it necessary. The relapse prevention group meets once a week as well, but is co-ed. This focuses on healthy coping skills and the discussion of triggers. Clients work together to come up with healthy ways of dealing with stress and fears. In addition to offering group programs, HTC also offers individual, family and marriage counseling. These sessions are one hour in length and allow the clients to delve deeper into individual issues.

For adults addicted to opiates, there is a medically assisted methadone withdrawal program. This is done on an outpatient basis, with the client consistently monitored by medical professionals. Clients come to the clinic for dosing and continue with this process until the medical team deems it no longer necessary.

For adolescents, there is a cannabis treatment series, a discovery group and a like skills group series. The cannabis treatment series includes a Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) session and three CBT sessions. The goal of this program is help clients find new ways of dealing with stress, while identifying triggers and learning about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

The 10-week discovery group series meets for once a week, for two hours of psycho-educational and experiential training. Activities such as relaxation exercises, role playing, discussions and workbook assignments are included. Topics such as drug education, relapse prevention, self-help groups and sexually transmitted diseases are discussed in detail.

The adolescent life skills group educates clients on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, while incorporating Motivational Interviewing (MI) and positive coping mechanisms. This group meets once a week, for two hours at a time. This duration spent here depends on the individual’s needs.

The staff of HTC Outpatient Services includes CADCs, LCSWs, Certified Mental Health Counselors and an RN who is also a CDAC and specializes in addiction medicine.
