The Basics
Just A Clean House is a nonprofit sober living organization that opened its doors in 2005. Founded by recovering addict O’Mar Taylor, it gives men dealing with substance abuse a safe and supportive environment to maintain their sobriety while pursuing a 12-step program. In order to be admitted, clients must be able to live independently, be at least seven days sober and have verifiable income. Two forms of valid ID are also required. JACH runs a total of nine houses in Durham, North Carolina (two of which, as of press time, are not yet listed on the website).
Accommodations and Amenities
JACH’s homes feature both shared and single rooms that are assigned to clients according to seniority. All rooms are fully furnished. Shared rooms are split between two residents. Each house can host about four men at a time. JACH also provides phone lines, high-speed Internet and flat-screen TVs with cable.
Additionally, the houses have washer/dryers and each has its own dining area, living room and a spacious yard, as well as parking spots. An added bonus is that JACH has partnered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and is able to provide all food for clients. The kitchens are fully stocked, but residents are responsible for doing the cooking themselves.
Rules and Regulations
There is zero tolerance for substance use at JACH. Curfew is at 11 pm for the first 30 days, while residents are also not allowed to leave the house before 6 am. Clients are required to attend three recovery-themed meetings per week, though that includes CA/NA/AA meetings, group and individual therapy or even church services. None of these are provided directly through JACH. The overarching philosophy at JACHS is that their staff do not advise clients on the specifics of recovery.
JACH has very lenient rules on guests—visitation hours go from 9 am to 11 pm. After the first 30 days, residents may spend up to three nights out of the house and are allowed to have overnight guests up to two nights a week (though children are not allowed to stay overnight). JACH considers itself to be family-oriented and provides much of its support through peer relationships. House managers live in every house, though there are no other staff members on-site. No minimum time or contract is required.
In Summary
Just A Clean House lives up to its name, offering a relaxed take on sober living. No on-site therapeutic or sobriety support services are provided and the rules and regulations are not as strictly enforced as at many other facilities. JACH may not be suitable for those looking for more structured and supportive facilities, but those who are already making progress with sobriety may be interested.
