The Basics
Falling under the banner of Advocate Health Care, the largest health system in Illinois with more than 250 sites of care and 12 acute-care hospitals, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is located in the village of Downers Grove, Illinois, approximately 22 miles west of Chicago. The behavioral health wing of the facility offers a comprehensive dual diagnosis program for chemical dependency that includes residential services for a medical detox, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Accommodations and Food
While Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital does not offer a comprehensive inpatient program for substance abuse, it does offer a residential stay in its hospital facility for those in need of a medical detox. Clients can expect typical hospital rooms with a roommate and basic furnishings, though private rooms are available. The detox process typically lasts three to five days, though clients can expand this length when needed. During this time clients have access to medical doctors as well as a 24-hour nursing staff and three hot meals are provided each day, cafeteria-style. Most of a client’s time in detox is spend working with LADCs from the facility’s outpatient program to establish a program of care when the detox process is completed.
Treatment and Staff
The most comprehensive program for substance abuse offered at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital’s behavioral health wing is its PHP, which consists of group and individual therapy held five days a week at the facility. Dual diagnosis care is available for those enrolled in the substance abuse program. Clients can expect a full schedule Monday through Friday with a three-hour mental health group in the mornings, an hour lunch break (lunch is not provided, but clients eat in the hospital cafeteria) and an afternoon group session focused on chemical dependency. These sessions are led by LADCs and LCSWs and clients can expect individual therapy with a staff psychiatrist three times a week as well as medication management. Clients can also schedule individual sessions with their personal counselor. While the program utilizes a mix of therapies, CBT is the most prominent and clients should also expect a strong emphasis placed on 12-step recovery with weekly meetings hosted at the facility on Fridays.
Typically, the PHP lasts two weeks, with clients then dropping to an IOP, which follows a similar program of care, with three days of group sessions and individual therapy twice a week. Following this, clients drop down to a standard outpatient program for a period of several weeks, attending group sessions when needed and meeting with their individual counselor once a week. Visits with the psychiatrist are also available at this time. The facility has no official aftercare program.
Extras
In addition to its comprehensive dual diagnosis program, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital also offers a wide variety of behavioral health services, including holding a variety of support groups for family members, most notably, a caregiver’s support group for those caring for an elderly loved one. Clients can also expect a family program, with family and loved ones invited to attend individual therapy sessions.
In Summary
Falling under the expansive network of the Advocate Health Care organization, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital offers a substantial program for substance abuse with medical detox services, a PHP and an IOP that consists of a mandatory dual diagnosis component, CBT-informed care and an emphasis on 12-step recovery. Evidence based treatment combined with clinical care make this a solid choice for those seeking a comprehensive outpatient program.
