The Basics
Founded in 2009 about an hour west of Hartford in Canaan, Connecticut, Beckley House provides sober living for men who are 18 years and older. Their mission is to provide an adventure-based environment, so that clients have fun, plus acquire solid life and recovery tools, while they are surrounded by a group of peers.
Accommodations and Amenities
Beckley House is a huge, ornate Victorian house with red trim. The house, which is nestled in the Berkshire Hills, has been renovated into a ten-apartment complex. Beckley House has a 25-bed capacity, and newcomers are accommodated in double-occupancy, fully furnished rooms. The rooms include twin beds, dressers and closets. Since this is a peer-led house, singles are reserved for senior residents who hold leadership positions.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. On Wednesday nights, the residents enjoy a catered dinner from a local restaurant. Typically, the entrées include a taco dish, chicken and/or pasta. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi, and laundry facilities. The program manager, resides on the premises, and oversees operations.
Rules and Regulations
Typically, clients have undergone at least 28 days of primary care at a drug rehab. However, sometimes Beckley House admits clients who have arrived straight out of detox. This is done on a case-by-case basis. As a peer-led community, Beckley House operates on a three-phase system, and each phase has its own requirements. A six-month minimum length of stay is recommended, and some clients have lived at Beckley House for two years.
The program manager oversees a resident management team, and the members also are in charge of certain responsibilities. During the first phase, which lasts approximately 30 days, clients are transported to two daily 12-step meetings. During this time, they must get a home group, obtain a sponsor and acquire the phone numbers of ten men who are in AA or NA so that they can build a solid support network. During the first 30 days, the curfew is 10 pm. After that time, the curfew is set for midnight. Additionally, they work on steps one and two during this time. During the first 30 days, the curfew is 10 pm. After that time, the curfew is set for midnight.
During phase two, residents are completely immersed in the 12 steps. They must attend daily 12-step meetings, for a period of 90 days and focus on step work. During this period they get a job, participate in community service or pursue their education, for a minimum of 30 hours a week. As the residents progress through the phases, they obtain more responsibilities within the house, and fewer restrictions. Phase three includes the availability of limited leader and house manager positions, which are filled by a select number of clients. Acquiring a management position allows a resident to pay reduced rent.
Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse must leave, but staff helps them get to a safe destination.
Extras
On the weekends, clients participate in a plethora of outdoor activities which include regular hiking, bowling, skiing, canoeing, road trips to the beach, white water rafting (on an annual basis weather permitting) and movie outings.
In Summary
Beckley House boasts a high success rate for clients due to its 12-step protocol, adventure-based program and peer support. While working their steps, clients are surrounded by a solid group of peers, and enjoy a strong sense of fellowship, which is quite beneficial to those in early recovery. Beckley House does not like to disclose their address, for the privacy and safety of their clients.
