The Basics
Founded in Delray Beach, Florida by Millie Tennessee, who has been clean and sober more than 13 years, Miracles DO Happen LLC provides sober living for women. Tennessee, who previously worked with a partner at another sober living residence, amicably parted ways with him after he implemented a faith-based protocol in the house. While Tennessee is a Christian, her main mission is to help women of all different beliefs. Miracles DO Happen is a 12-step oriented house where women are free to choose a God of their own understanding.
Accommodations and Amenities
Miracles DO Happen is comprised of two new townhomes, each accommodating seven women. The homes include a pool, and a gym. Clients share double-occupancy furnished rooms. The women are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation, which is conducted in fully equipped kitchens. Some clients qualify for food stamps, which aids towards the purchase of food.
Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, a landline with unlimited long distance calling, house computers, laundry facilities, and transportation to meetings and the grocery store. Each property has a residential manager who lives on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
Prior to admission, clients must have undergone detox or have attended residential treatment. A three-month minimum length of stay is required, but usually clients stay longer. Upon arrival, the women undergo a blackout period and can’t leave the house, unless accompanied by a senior resident or staff.
Requirements include attending two daily 12-step meetings, which also include a mandatory women’s meeting, which takes place at 8:30 am, Mondays through Fridays, and 10:30 am Sundays at The Crossroads Club, a local AA/NA hall. Those that want to check out other recovery support meetings including Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery are encouraged to do so. Women who work or go to school full-time are allowed to attend fewer weekly meetings, determined on a case-by-case basis. Unemployed residents must look for work, volunteer for community service and/or pursue an academic education. Clients requiring outpatient counseling are provided with referrals.
After 30 days, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. By the second month, clients must have acquired sponsors, and are working, going to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or attending school. Other requirements include performance of household chores, and attendance at the house meetings. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Residents who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises, to ensure the safety of the entire household.
Extras
The residents learn how to get discount bus passes, apply for food stamps, and other valuable information. Other services besides housing include employment coaching and case management and counseling referrals. Miracles DO Happen is located one mile from the beach.
In Summary
Tennessee has established a unique female sober living environment that is highly sensitive and aware of women’s issues. She works hand in hand with her clients, and provides much needed support, as they work on their recovery process. Miracles DO Happen is a great option for women looking to find a beautiful sober living community near the beach. Miracles DO Happen does not disclose their address, to protect the privacy and safety of clients.
