The Basics
Founded in 1902 with the original mission of providing services to newly arrived immigrants, Greenwich House of New York City has evolved to offer a wide range of behavioral health and community-oriented services. Dispersed among the facility’s three locations in Manhattan, these services include an outpatient chemical dependency program, located in Midtown, adolescent and mental health programs at its Barrow Street location in the West Village and Methadone services offered at its Mercer Street facility in Soho. All treatment is evidence based.
Treatment and Staff
Greenwich House’s chemical dependency program offers two distinct tracks of care for clients. The first is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of three three-hour group therapy sessions each week and at least one individual session each week. The second is the standard outpatient program, which is highly personalized and consists of an individualized mix of group and individual therapy.
The facility generally follows a CBT-oriented program of care with an emphasis on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and offers a variety of specialty groups and services to complement treatment, such as art therapy, creative writing and yoga classes. While there is no particular emphasis placed on 12-step recovery principles during treatment sessions, clients can receive information about and are encouraged to attend local AA/NA meetings. The facility aims to keep group sessions small and there are never more than 12 clients in a group at a time. All of Greenwich House’s sessions are led by its primary staff of CSACs and LSWs. The facility also employs a vocational counselor who meets with clients to help procure and maintain steady employment during their time in treatment.
The facility also has a strong dual diagnosis component, which includes visits with an on-staff psychiatrist and medication management. Because these psychiatrist visits are typically limited to once per month, clients can augment these sessions by scheduling weekly individual sessions with a licensed mental health counselor to address co-occurring disorders. In order to qualify for dual diagnosis services, clients must complete one month of treatment in the chemical dependency program. Additionally, clients with a primary need of mental health counseling are often referred to Greenwich House’s Barrow Street mental health program.
There are no detox services offered at the Greenwich House, though as previously mentioned, the facility does offer Methadone services, which are available to clients in the chemical dependency program.
Greenwich House’s IOP is a long-term program, typically concluding after six to 12 weeks. From here, clients step down into a more traditional outpatient program. Aftercare consists of a continuing care program focused on relapse prevention. Clients who have completed either outpatient track can attend individual sessions once a month and group sessions as needed. Typically, clients continue to receive services from Greenwich House for up to a year and a half following completion of treatment.
Extras
Clients participating in Greenwich House’s chemical dependency program also have access to a wide variety of arts-related and community-oriented programs offered at the facility’s Barrow Street location. These include music education, pottery classes and senior services, as well as the aforementioned adolescent services and mental health programs.
In Summary
Given the long, distinguished history of Greenwich House, clients participating in its chemical dependency program can be sure they are receiving proven care from a trusted institution. Clients can expect a comprehensive IOP with a diverse offering of groups and treatment methods that also include dual diagnosis services and a long-term aftercare program. As a bonus, alternative methods such as art therapy and other community supportive services make this a solid choice for outpatient treatment.
