inexpensive rehabs in Oswego, NYThe Basics

With two locations in Fulton and Oswego, New York, the Oswego Council on Alcohol and Addiction provides a wide range of services for men, women and young adults. Both basic outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are available for those with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, with additional options for clients struggling with gambling addiction. The facility is certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and accepts both insurance and Medicaid.

Treatment and Staff

Before enrolling in a program, each client is given an initial evaluation to determine an appropriate level of treatment. Because the program is family and community-oriented, initial intake sessions include the prospective client and a family member or close friend.

The outpatient programs have several levels of treatment to chose from. For those requiring lower intensity programs, there are five distinct options: the education group, which meets twice a week for 7 weeks, is a good option is for those with less severe substance abuse issues. This track is designed to prevent the need for further treatment by educating clients on risky behaviors. After that, there are two gender-specific group therapy tracks that meet once a week for 16 weeks (minimum) which focuses on the 12 steps, stress and anger management, domestic violence, assertiveness training, self-esteem building and other life issues. There is also a young adult group that follows a similar structure but also covers recognizing triggers and is often used as a first step after an intervention. Finally, for those further along in recovery, Oswego Council offers a relapse prevention group that meets once a week for 12 weeks. Groups max out around 16 clients, with an average of 12 to 15 per session.

There are two higher-intensity options which serve as the facility’s IOP: an early recovery group, which meets three times a week for 16 weeks and a dual diagnosis group, which meets three times a week for 20 weeks. In addition to groups, clients in all of the programs are required to attend off-site AA/NA meetings at least once a week and to supplement their program with individual therapy anywhere from one to four times a month.

Oswego Council has 14 direct staff members that include CASACs and CSWs certified in evidence-based treatment methods like CBT and DBT. It also has two doctors on staff who provide medical support when necessary.

Extras

Other supplemental programs include vocational rehab services designed to help clients become more employable and get back on their feet after treatment. This includes drug testing, assessments and other educational needs. Clients are encouraged to attend the relapse prevention group as a step down option for aftercare.

Oswego Council also offers a range of prevention services for the community including business and staff training for alcohol and drug education, gambling interventions and an on-site resource library for people who want to learn more about addiction or research further treatment options. There is also the BASICS Program, which provides brief alcohol screenings and intervention services for college students—specifically those attending SUNY Oswego. Rather than advocating abstinence, this option takes a harm reduction approach and aims to steer students away from high-risk behavior.

Project Intervention is a program for first-time drug offenders under the age of 25 and consists of two 120-minute sessions used as an alternative to sentencing. Similarly, Project U-Turn is for underage clients with DUIs and includes two three-hour sessions and is an OASAS approved option.

Finally, the Oswego Council offers responsible server training for those who distribute and serve alcoholic drinks and the You(th) Decide program—a youth gambling prevention initiative. All services are available at either location.

In Summary

Overall, the Oswego Council on Alcohol and Addiction provides a range of treatment services including outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment and community prevention services. The organization aims to both help individuals recover from addiction and mental illness as well as to educate those around them on how to best support their loved ones or employees. This facility is a solid choice for those seeking comprehensive outpatient care and ongoing support.
