kent washingtonThe Basics

Based about 20 miles from Seattle in Kent, Washington, Kent Youth and Family Services is a behavioral health institution offering services to children, youth and their families in South King County. The facility offers outpatient substance abuse services designed to assist adolescents ages 11 to 20 with dual-diagnosis support included. Kent Youth and Family Services helps an estimated 8,000 adolescents annually.

Treatment and Staff

The most comprehensive program at Kent Youth and Family Services is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). IOP consists of three group therapy sessions a week and one individual therapy session, all of which are led by LCDCs. To allow clients to continue with schooling uninterrupted, the facility schedules all of these sessions in the evenings Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm and on Mondays from 4 to 5 pm. While these sessions cover a variety of subjects, the facility relies on the Seven Challenges model and includes Motivational Interviewing (MI) and relapse prevention. While the facility does provide information about 12-step recovery, it is not a required part of the program.

For those in need of a less intensive program, Kent Youth and Family Services has a host of other services including the Back on Track program, which is an early intervention option for lower risk clients. There’s also the Diversion Program which allows clients convicted of a minor drug offense to attend their diversion hearing at the facility rather than in court, offering an educational component to this judicial process.

Within the substance abuse program, dual diagnosis care is available in the form of group and individual sessions that address co-occurring disorders. It’s worth noting, however, that Kent Youth and Family Services also offers an entirely separate outpatient mental health program. As a result, those in need of more intensive care may find their needs better served by enrolling in both programs. Those in the mental health track can expect regular visits with a psychiatric nurse practitioner and medication management. The facility does not offer a medical detox and clients in need of this service must complete the process before beginning treatment.

Kent Youth and Family Services also advocates family involvement in recovery, with a family program available on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 pm. The program is open to all parents and is a peer-led support group, during which parents can receive information about their child’s progress, ask questions and receive information about how to help in recovery.

Each client’s program varies though typical lengths of stay generally last six months. In keeping with this, aftercare is offered but is highly tailored to each individual’s needs, usually consisting of group and individual therapy when needed.

Extras

In addition to these outpatient services, Kent Youth and Family Services also offers the ROADS program, a recovery school at the Kent Phoenix Academy which is the first public substance abuse disorder facility in the state and features a supportive classroom environment for high school students in recovery.

In Summary

An expansive institution with a large variety of behavioral health services, Kent Youth and Family Services is valuable resource for families in Kent, Covington and South King County. Those attending the substance abuse program can expect an affordable outpatient program with dual-diagnosis care and a strong emphasis on family involvement in their recovery.
