Seafarers Addiction Rehabilitation CenterThe Basics

Located in Valley Lee, a small town in Maryland’s St. Mary’s County, Seafarers Addiction Rehabilitation Center is a private, non-profit residential treatment facility for those in the maritime industry. Operated by the Seafarers Health and Benefits Plan, this facility has been serving the community since 1975. This program is not open to the public but instead requires referrals made by the union, contracted companies or the United States Coast Guard. Aiming to reduce the chemical dependency issues in the seafarer world, both the 12 steps and evidence-based therapy are used to aid clients.

Accommodations and Food

Accommodations are basic but comfortable at this 24-bed facility. Rooms are shared between two clients, featuring twin sized beds and dressers. The facility also offers offices, therapy rooms, lecture rooms and a dining hall. Three meals a day are provided, offering adequate nutrition and caffeine in the mornings. After two weeks, clients have access to the in-house phone. Clients are encouraged to stay fit and have access to a small weight room during their free time. This space offers a couple treadmills, an elliptical and free weights.

Treatment and Staff

As previously mentioned, this program offers comprehensive residential care to those in the maritime industry. Referrals are required and enrollment must be done through port agents. Transportation to the facility is arranged, but transportation fees are the responsibility of the client; loans are available. Detox is not offered.

A minimum length of stay is four weeks, although this can extend up to 12 weeks. The treatment schedule includes weekly individual therapy, daily group therapy, educational lectures and audio and visual presentations. Group topics focus on anger management, relapse prevention, coping skills, the dangers of substance abuse and processing. Educational lectures focus on the dangers of prolonged substance abuse, as well as the addiction as a disease model. During their stay, clients are exposed to the 12-step community. On-site AA/NA meetings are held in the evenings, allowing clients to get in a healthy habit of daily recovery maintenance. It is highly suggested that the clients continue this kind of meeting schedule after they are released.

The staff consists of LADCs.
