The Basics
Since 1943, Lawrence County Behavior Health Clinic has provided low- and no-cost mental health and primary care services to the residents of Southeastern Illinois. It has also offered outpatient substance abuse treatment in the county seat of Lawrenceville for over twenty years. Treatment is evidence-based and clients participate in traditional therapy sessions with credentialed staff.
Treatment and Staff
A prospective client’s first step is to come to Lawrence County for a Substance Abuse Evaluation, which are conducted every weekday except Tuesdays. After the evaluation, the lead substance abuse clinician makes a treatment plan with the client. All programs typically incorporate group therapy up to two times each week and individual therapy as-needed. Clients and staff determine whether attending outside peer support meetings, such as AA/NA, is recommended—though attendance is not required. The duration of outpatient treatment is progress-based, with clients working with their individual counselor to formulate a step down strategy.
Group therapy is a combination of processing groups and psycho-education classes on the effects of addiction. Groups are small, usually numbering five to 10 participants, ensuring that each client receives individual attention. The groups are led by an LSW who also provides individual therapy and counseling. Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive referrals to Lawrence County’s psychiatrist and MSWs for therapy and medication management.
Extras
Clients can drop-in to weekly processing groups for aftercare as they wish and are encouraged to check in with their counselor periodically to help stay on track.
Additionally, the State of Illinois runs The Warm Line (866-359-7953)—a phone service local residents can call for crisis intervention and mental health and substance abuse questions and resources. Also available is the Recovery and Empowerment Handbook—an informative book on mental illness that can be downloaded on Lawrence County’s website. Lab services, primary care and home healthcare services are also available.
In Summary
Lawrence County Health Department Behavior Health Clinic offers outpatient substance abuse treatment with small group sizes and access to concurrent mental health care. Its sliding scale fee and progress-based duration make it an accessible treatment option for those whose substance use can be treated in an outpatient setting.
