The Basics
The Center for Addiction Treatment (CAT) was founded in 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the third largest city in the state. The facility offers detox and short-term residential treatment for adult men and women in the Cincinnati area.
Accommodations and Food
CAT’s residential program operates out of a large hospital building near Union Terminal in the West End neighborhood of Cincinnati. The building has a total of 15 beds and a variety of single and double rooms. Residents are provided with an individual bed and closet area.
CAT places a large focus on recreation and regularly provides both indoor and outdoor activities and events for clients. In the summer, clients regularly play corn hole or catch outside the facility. If the weather is too cold, clients watch TV, read a book from CAT’s small library or play cards together. Smoking is allowed in designated outdoor areas.
Meals are served in a cafeteria with a salad bar. The food is prepared by an on-site group of cooks. Although the cooks work from a set menu, they will accommodate dietary restrictions or needs. CAT also provides snacks throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at CAT begins with a phone conversation followed by an in-person assessment with a counselor. Clients who are not sober or stable when they are assessed are referred to CAT’s detox program.
CAT offers a medically monitored detox. The program usually lasts seven days for opiate detox and five days for alcohol detox. Counselors and nurses work around the clock with the clients to ensure they are stable and as healthy as possible. CAT does not administer any type of medication-assisted treatment such as Suboxone or Methadone to detoxing clients. During the detox process clients spend most of their time in educational groups and individual counseling sessions.
When clients have finished with the detox program, they can step down to CAT’s residential program if they wish. The short-term program lasts for 28 days and consists of group and individual counseling. The groups consist of 10 to 15 clients and are led by a counselor. The counselors utilize CBT and place a large emphasis on relapse prevention. Counselors also implement music and art therapy as well as some spirituality and recreation. Individual meetings are always available but scheduled based on the needs of the client.
The program is also dual diagnosis and welcomes anyone suffering from co-occurring disorders.
CAT’s staff consists of a mixture of LADCs and social workers.
Extras
CAT offers a family program every Thursday evening for clients and their family members. This meeting is led by a counselor and focuses on co-dependency issues and substance abuse education. When clients in the residential treatment program have completed two of these nights, they are then allowed to leave the program for five hours a day on the weekends.
CAT has aftercare for clients leaving the short-term inpatient treatment. Clients in this program attend weekly group meetings that focus mostly on relapse prevention. This program can last up to 12 weeks and clients join in a graduation ceremony upon completion.
In Summary
The Center for Addiction Treatment is a dynamic and intensive treatment option for adults suffering from substance abuse, chemical dependency or co-occurring disorders in the Cincinnati area. The diversity of group options allows clients to explore alternative treatment paths such as art and music therapy. Additionally, the weekly family meeting not only includes the clients’ family in treatment but also provides the clients with emotional support outside of the program.
