The Basics
Parkview Health is a non-profit healthcare facility located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Originally founded in 1878 as the Fort Wayne City Hospital, the facility has developed and expanded their offerings over the decades, finally becoming Parkview Health in 1995. In addition to mental health care, PH also offers general health services for children, adults and seniors. Varying intensities of treatment are available including basic inpatient, detox and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) with programs designed to meet each client’s unique needs.
Accommodations and Food
The inpatient facilities at Parkview Health are a hospital setting with a two-story wing dedicated to substance abuse. Clients requiring medical detox are treated in the same ward but are kept separate from clients who do not require this service. The second floor has 30-beds in 15 rooms, with clients accommodated in double-occupancy bedrooms with twin beds, private bathrooms and space for storing personal effects. Linens are provided and laundered by the facility. Staff are on call all hours of the day and night to assist clients.
The lower level has a cafeteria, treatment rooms, private offices and a gym for exercise. A day room is also available with TV and movies for clients to enjoy during their downtime. The cafeteria serves typical American-fare that varies from healthy to comfort. Sandwiches, salads, pasta and some type of protein are served regularly. Cookies and small desserts may be available as well as tea, coffee and soft drinks.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to enrolling, all clients are seen by a group of staff members who determine the level of care needed. Clients can schedule an assessment appointment and enter treatment immediately. An intake counselor, LCSW and nurse are all present for a bio-psycho-social assessment. If the client requires medical detox they are admitted immediately for treatment.
The inpatient program is tailored for adults requiring round-the-clock care on a short-term basis. Dual diagnosis support is available for those with additional mental health concerns in tandem with substance abuse. Clients are seen daily by a Psychiatrist for medication management or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone. Residents participate in individualized treatment plans developed between the client and their primary counselor. Family therapy, group and individual therapy are included as are on-site 12-step meetings. Clients are not allowed to have their personal phones, laptops or other technologies so that they may stay focused on their recovery process.
Clients requiring less-intensive treatment are enrolled in the PHP track. This program incorporates the same services as the inpatient track—including individual, group and family therapy—but only requires attendance of treatment five days per week, Monday through Friday, with six hours of recovery focused activities.
Groups and individual sessions are facilitated by CADCs and LCSWs. Family members are encouraged to attend about three hours of treatment twice per week. Groups focus on psycho-education, relapse prevention and development of coping skills. The average length of the program is one week to 30 days.
The clinical staff utilizes a wide variety of therapy techniques including evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT. Twelve step principles are also incorporated giving clients exposure to peer-support. Clients enrolled in the PHP track are expected to stay abstinent during the entirety of treatment. Drug testing is performed at random as well as breathalyzer tests.
Extras
A family program is available through Parkview Health to ensure that the family stays involved in the recovery process. While they are encouraged to attend certain activities, a family night is facilitated by the clinical staff allowing families to support each other. Educational topics are discussed as well as Alanon methods helping families to be healthy and not engage in enabling behaviors.
In Summary
Parkview Health has a range of mental health services including a solid substance abuse treatment track. Clients may be admitted for detox, inpatient or a PHP track depending upon their individualized treatment plan. Treatment may or may not include medication monitoring by a Psychiatrist, MAT, individual and group sessions with credentialed counselors as well as family therapy. Parkview ensures that each client has a unique experience that guides them towards lasting recovery.
