Encino CaliforniaThe Basics

Located in Encino, California—a San Fernanado Valley suburb of Los Angeles—Alta Centers opened its doors in the summer of 2015. The founder, Garrett Braukman, established Alta to provide outpatient treatment options that respond to the real-life challenges clients face as they transition from residential treatment to independent living. As a recovering addict himself, Braukman brings his personal experience and credentials to the Southern California recovery landscape.

Braukman developed the Alta Centers treatment curriculum to provide a highly individualized program that encourages clients to envision a goal-oriented sober future. Alta also has treatment tracks tailored for young adults and those in the entertainment industry.

Treatment and Staff

Most Alta clients begin treatment by enrolling in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), attending treatment from 9 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. After several weeks of successful treatment, they may step down to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), attending treatment either from 9 am to 12 pm or 6 to 9 pm three days a week. Clients who have completed PHP and IOP treatment and who have maintained at least four months of sobriety can attend treatment at the standard outpatient level which meets once or twice a week.

Treatment sessions include individual and group therapy as well as psycho-education classes. Groups and classes typically have a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-10 with specialty gender-specific and age-specific groups. Alta also has several groups which focus on recovery for young adults between the ages of 18 and 35.

Therapists and counselors at Alta are licensed MFTs, International MFTs and CADCs. Treatment incorporates a variety of evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solutions Focused and Structural Family therapy. Alta’s clinical staff has also developed a unique 24-week recovery curriculum which uses Marsha Lineham’s DBT Skills Training and Brene Brown’s Shame Resilience. Processing groups and classes address relationship skills in recovery, relapse prevention, triggers and setting healthy boundaries.

A unique feature of all treatment at Alta Centers is that each client is grouped with a three-member treatment team. Each week, clients have a session with their counselor, their case-manager and their therapist or psychiatrist. All team-members work together to ensure clients are improving their life skills and progressing towards their treatment goals. Case managers in particular work with clients to bridge treatment and independent living, helping them access employment and educational opportunities.

Counselors work with clients to develop a weekly goal for peer-support group attendance, requiring them to attend community 12-step, SMART Recovery or Refuge Recovery meetings.

Extras

To further help clients develop support and sober social skills, Alta schedules recreational excursions such as movies, golf and beach outings as well as amusement park visits. Alta also offers sober companion services which can be particularly helpful to entertainment industry clientele who regularly attend high-pressure social events as part of their professional obligations.

For aftercare, clients can attend a weekly alumni meeting and case managers maintain contact post-treatment to support long-term sobriety.

In Summary

Alta Centers prides itself on offering exceptionally individualized and client-responsive outpatient treatment that combines evidence-based therapy and one-on-one coaching typically reserved for high-end residential settings. Alta endeavors to provide this intensive level of support for clients while they encounter real-world challenges, enabling them to avoid relapse and build productive, independent lives in sobriety.
