Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Felicity House was founded in 1974 in Los Angeles, California, by a group of individuals who were concerned that there were hardly any transitional care facilities for women leaving rehab in the area. Today, Felicity House provides safe and structured sober living for women at various stages of recovery. No more than eight women reside at Felicity House, in keeping with an intimate family-style ambience.

Accommodations and Amenities

The white Victorian-style house is located south of Beverlywood and in close proximity to Culver City. The house has a yard full of Birds of Paradise and geraniums. Surrounded by a white picket fence, and shrouded by trees, the house is on the corner of a quiet residential street.

The white-walled living room boasts eclectic furnishings, which include a Vintage desk, a black leather couch and an Oriental rug. A house computer is centrally located for the residents to use on the desk. By an old-fashioned staircase, there is an upright piano and a crystal chandelier that hangs overhead.

Clients are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds and dressers. The women are responsible for their own groceries. Meals are prepared in a quaint, fully equipped kitchen. A house manager lives on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

At Felicity House, each newly arrived client is appointed a big sister. Both women go over the house rules, and the big sister helps the newcomer acclimate, as well as providing guidance and support.

Requirements of residency include obtaining and meeting on a weekly basis with a sponsor and attending between five and ten weekly 12-step meetings (depending on a client’s employment status). Residents must also perform household chores, attend a weekly house meeting and meet with the director, on a monthly basis, to discuss goals. Unemployed clients are expected to look for work, enroll in school or participate in community service.

Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. At Felicity House, a zero tolerance policy is practiced, and residents who have relapsed are evicted immediately. The curfew is 11:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Felicity House hosts a Wednesday night 12-step women’s speaker meeting, which features former residents and women from the local recovery community.

Extras

Felicity House is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.

In Summary

Felicity House relies on donations from the local community and tries to help financially challenged clients. This isn’t exactly high end sober living, but the house has character, and the residents form a tight sisterhood which is beneficial for women new to recovery. Felicity House is popular and tends to be full, so interested parties should call or email to express interest.
