The Basics
Founded in 2001 in Hemet, California, Hemet Valley Recovery Center & Sage Retreat is an addiction treatment center that provides detox, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Situated at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, Hemet is between the cities of Palm Springs and Riverside and 80 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. The beauty of the natural setting is incorporated in the rehab’s holistic treatment approach. Primary care residents participate in spiritual workshops in Idyllwild, a local mountain community, as well as ride the Palm Springs aerial tramway.
Accommodations and Food
At Hemet Recovery Center & Sage Retreat, detox clients live in the Hemet Recovery Center, which is a medical unit adjacent to Sage Retreat, the residential treatment facility. The co-ed unit, which looks like a hospital, accommodates between 15 and 21 clients who are paired in gender-specific semi-private rooms, which include hospital beds. Hemet Recovery Center has a separate dining room. Residents are served three meals a day. Entrees are pretty much hospital food, but clients are provided with healthy snacks.
At the Sage Retreat there are approximately 14 clients. The facility has a 16-bed capacity. Sage Retreat resembles a college dorm and clients are paired in gender-specific rooms. A dietician prepares the menu. Clients are served three meals a day, along with plenty of nutritious snacks including cheese strips, yogurt, crackers, and fruit. Lunches include sandwiches, and menu options include pork chops, grilled fish and chicken with sides such as salads, veggies or baked potatoes. While vegetarians are not accommodated, there are plenty of healthy side dishes to choose from. Coffee is served only in the mornings.
At Hemet Valley Recovery Center & Sage Retreat, cellphones are taken away upon arrival. Clients receive limited payphone privileges. Both facilities include laundry rooms.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients receive a comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment plans. Those requiring detox are usually admitted that same day. On-site detox typically lasts five days and residents are monitored 24/7 by doctors and nurses. Medication-assisted treatment is provided to ease withdrawal symptoms. Clients who complete detox are encouraged to enter the inpatient program. Detox is approximately $4,300, but the cost ranges, depending on the level of care.
Residential treatment lasts 30 days. Hemet Valley Recovery Center & Sage Retreat’s addiction treatment approach for clients uses evidence-based methods, specifically CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), in conjunction with the 12 steps. Holistic therapy is woven into the program, with clients participating in yoga and meditation groups. Weekly treatment includes individual and daily group therapy, educational seminars, case management and attendance at 12-step meetings. Medication management with a licensed psychologist is provided for clients requiring dual diagnosis support.
A typical daily schedule includes an AA meeting at 7 am, followed by breakfast at 8 am. Meditation is at 9 am, followed by recreation at 10 am. From 11 am to noon, depending on the day, there is a chemical dependency lecture or nutrition and HIV class or chronic pain discussion group. From noon to 1:30 pm, clients take a lunch break. From 1:30 pm to 5 pm, the weekly schedule includes gender-specific group therapy, peer support groups, chemical dependency lecture, yoga, recreation, a family program or an NA meeting (on Fridays). Dinner is served at 5 pm. From 6 pm to 7 pm, the weekly quota includes a relapse prevention group, chemical dependency lecture or Alanon. From 7 pm to 8 pm, clients participate in a self esteem group, a Let Go and Let God 12-step meeting, processing, Sober Fun or journaling sessions.
There are 31 staff members on board, including four medical directors, a CADC, other chemical dependency counselors, assessment nurses, case managers, registered nurses, holistic health practitioners, an acupuncturist and administrative support.
Extras
Aftercare is provided, and includes group therapy. At Hemet Valley Recovery Center, sober living is offered for clients wanting to build a strong foundation in their recovery. The 30-day cost is $850.
The specialized older adult residential treatment program, for seniors, ages 55 and older, is in a separate unit on campus. Treatment parallels the Sage Retreat program, and includes specialized services such as age-specific therapy, dual diagnosis support, psychiatric counseling and physical therapy (if necessary).
In Summary
The staff has excellent credentials, and clients receive a gamut of individualized attention and care, as well as a comprehensive treatment program. Recreational outings teach clients how to have fun in sobriety, while they bond with their peers. The unique natural setting and dry climate is quite healing and allows clients an opportunity to find serenity while they work on their recovery.
