The Granite House

The Basics

The Granite House is a three-phase, extended care sober living program located in Derry, New Hampshire. The phases track the gradual evolution of clients who are moving through recovery. The Granite House operates three sober living homes for men ages 18 to 35. Clients participate in recovery by working a 12-step program and the proximity to the White Mountains allows them to embrace recreational activities like skiing and snowboarding. Experiential therapy is integrated into the program. The Granite House also offers outpatient treatment services at Recovery First. Many of the staff, including house managers, are former clients who graduated from the program.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Granite House consists of three beautiful, colonial New England-style houses, each of which has three stories, light blue exteriors and wrap-around porches. Each floor has its own kitchen and bathrooms. The bedrooms have twin beds with cabinet blue bedding, navy blue window dressings, dark wood floors and large meeting rooms. The houses can accommodate up to 57 clients.

The Phase One house accommodates 35 residents, with double rooms for clients and a single room for the on-site house manager. The Phase Two house has 15 clients, with mostly double rooms and some singles. The Phase Three house has seven clients, who live in mostly single rooms. Common areas in all the houses have leather couches, a plasma TV with cable, Wi-Fi, an Xbox room and a library for study, step work and job-searching.

Meals are not included in the price at The Granite House. House managers oversee client budgets in the Phase One house, allotting $80 per week for food and $40 for miscellaneous purchases such as cigarettes. Staff keep spreadsheets of each client’s budget to allow them to focus on recovery without too much stress or distraction. Clients living at the Phase Two and Phase Three houses have more autonomy over finances and scheduling meals.

There are at least two staff members on duty during the day and one staffer for overnight shifts at the Phase One and Phase Two houses. A permanent house manager lives at the Phase Three house.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must commit to a three-month stay at The Granite House, though the average stay is six to nine months. Clients must have at least a few weeks of sobriety before being admitted into the program. There is a pre-admission phone screening and staff administer drug and alcohol urinalysis on a weekly basis.

As part of their 12-step immersion, Phase One clients must stay at the house for the majority of their time. Staff provide case management and one-on-one counseling services each week. The first few days at the Phase One house involve working with the Big Book of AA. Clients are required to get a sponsor, find a home group and obtain a service commitment at a 12-step meeting. The recovery schedule is demanding: 12-step meetings, group therapy at Recovery First, house meetings and morning meditation. But time is set aside for exercise so clients can let off steam. Clients must be back at the home before nighttime chores at 9:30 pm.

At the Phase Two house, clients learn life skills like time and money management. Staff teach problem-solving and team-building as part of the experiential therapy program. Staff oversee group activities like skiing, snowboarding, paintball, softball, basketball, indoor rock-climbing, yoga and weekly team sporting events. In Phase Two, clients continue 12-step work and participate in educational groups focused on money and career development. The length of stay at Phase Two housing is determined by staff. Curfew is at 10:30 pm on weeknights and 11:30 pm on weekends.

Phase Three requires clients to get a job. This phase allows clients to transition into independence and integrate back into the community. The house has peer “accountability groups” where clients help each other with step work. Clients and staff focus on rebuilding family relationships and setting goals for careers or higher education. Curfew during Phase Three is 11pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends.

Extras

The Granite House provides a monitoring program for clients who graduate, allowing former residents to remain accountable even after they have moved through each phase of living at the houses. The requirements include in-person 20-minute meetings with staff each week, one check-in phone call a week, four random drug tests per month and continued work with staff to identify triggers and relapse prevention strategies.

The Granite House also offers the ASPIRE program to help prepare clients for higher education. Staff assist clients in the admissions, financial aid and matriculation processes.

In Summary

The Granite House offers a unique opportunity for clients to receive outpatient treatment and extended care services, all while staying at a sober living home. This is not a treatment center per se, though the extended care program includes outpatient services and experiential treatment for clients to learn new skills and steadily transition back into society. Staff teach clients to integrate the principles of 12-step recovery into their sober lives.
