The Basics
A private, non-profit organization, Central New York Services has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment for over 20 years. Located in Syracuse, New York, three licensed outpatient programs are available for residents of Onondaga County. The Dual Recovery Program (DRP) treats adults with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders, while Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) are for those with either substance abuse or psychiatric issues. For adolescents and young adults, Choices offers substance abuse and dual diagnosis support.
Treatment and Staff
Walk-in evaluations for adults are offered on weekday mornings; appointments are required for adolescents. Clients are placed into whichever program will be most helpful, or are referred to other centers if they are determined to be in need of medically supervised detox or residential treatment. Once enrolled, a comprehensive assessment determines program length, goals and intensity, which are then outlined in individualized treatment plans. All programs utilize evidence-based practices, including Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. Modalities are continuously evaluated and updated to best meet the client’s needs. All recommendations are made by the clinical team, which includes a registered nurse, psychiatrist, outpatient supervisors, intake counselors and vocational specialists.
The DRP provides integrated dual diagnosis treatment, which includes tailored group therapy, medication management and psychiatric evaluation, treatment and monitoring. Individual sessions occur weekly to begin and are reduced to bi-weekly and then monthly as progress is made. Groups occur twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Gender-specific, LGBTQ and early recovery groups provide clients with the opportunity to share in a safe, peer-driven environment. In fact, peer mentoring is encouraged and is a great way to build accountability and self-esteem. Trauma and grief counseling can occur on a group or individual level, while all attend relapse prevention groups.
The PROS model emphasizes restoring skills needed for independent living through integrating treatment and support services. Specific life goals—such as education or employment—and a way to achieve them are established. In addition to psychiatric treatment, medication management and the aforementioned groups, clients also select from a range of educational courses. The classroom setting fosters a safe environment in which clients can learn and practice new skills at a comfortable pace. Courses include basic living skills, financial management, community living, skills development, cooking, parenting, wellness self-management, self-help information and psychoeducation. Intensive relapse prevention and symptom monitoring is available for all. Programming ranges from structured to casual and encourages volunteering or part-time work. The individualized treatment aims to assist clients with adapting to their disability or sobriety in a fun way.
Choices outlines a program for adolescents and young adults aged between 13 and 23 that encourages thoughtful decisions and self-determination. Emphasizing mutual respect and non-judgment, clients only make lifestyle changes or advance in treatment when they make the choice to. Clients participate in group, family and individual counseling and structured journaling assignments tackling only areas of their choosing.
The treatment team includes nurses, psychiatrists, CADCs and LCSWs.
Extras
Additional housing, financial management, mental health and employment programs are provided through partnerships with other private and government agencies.
