The Basics
The Army Substance Abuse Program has a mission to assist in the recovery of Army active-duty men and women. The program includes both inpatient and outpatient treatment options and is located at the Fort Gordon base in Fort Gordon, Georgia. Because the main goal of the program is for soldiers to be healthy and eligible for deployment, ASAP is highly regimented and fast-paced.
Accommodations and Food
ASAP’s treatment facility is located in a hospital setting on base. Every resident shares a gender-specific double bedroom with a bathroom. Rooms are clinical in their simplicity with white walls, no decorations and basic furnishings. Wake up is at 5 am every morning and each day is carefully structured from there. Clients are given phone and computer privileges at designated times and usage is dependent upon progress and behavior.
Meals are served three times a day in the dining facility. Food is basic American-fare. Dietary restrictions can be worked around if necessary. Soda and snacks are also allowed on site.
Treatment and Staff
The program begins with an assessment to make sure the client is a good fit. Those who require detox are enrolled in the on-site program prior to primary care. Both treatment and detox services are free.
Treatment in the inpatient program combines individual and group therapy with a strong emphasis on “regiment, team work and personal responsibility.” Drug tests are given at random. Outpatient treatment is individualized and developed on a person-to-person basis. Like inpatient, the outpatient track combines both group and one-on-one sessions.
The ASAP staff is composed of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. Staff also includes those training for a doctorate in psychology who are carefully monitored by senior staff.
Extras
ASAP offers an aftercare program which is mainly focused on maintaining structure for the client after treatment. The aftercare program is individualized and different for each client, but always stresses continued therapy and reaching out to others. There is also a campaign called “That Guy”, which urges army personal to behave responsibly when it comes to drugs and alcohol.
In Summary
The Army Substance Abuse Program offers a second chance at a successful life of service for active duty military struggling with addiction. Through high intensity discipline, an aftercare program and strong leadership it gives clients a real shot at recovery and wellness.
