The Basics
Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center began in 1967 as a 12-step focused residential treatment facility for men in Detroit, Michigan. Sacred Heart was founded by a priest and recovering alcoholic but has always provided non-denominational treatment. Over the years it expanded its residential facility (now with two locations, in Berrien Center and Richmond) to accommodate women and added detox services as well. There is also a transitional housing program for women in its Port Huron location. In 2004, Sacred Heart began providing outpatient treatment for substance abuse, and now does so from eight locations throughout Michigan.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes a combination of group and individual therapy. Clients attend group therapy at least once a week and usually have individual therapy every other week. The duration of outpatient treatment is progress-based, though most clients complete their treatment plan in 12 weeks. Family members can also attend therapy sessions at the counselor’s discretion.
The treatment teams at each branch include Master’s-level therapists, psychologists and addiction counselors. Psychiatrists are available in Flint and Madison Heights and provide medication management. Groups are highly interactive and use CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Topics include relapse prevention, coping skills, cross addiction and how to use the 12 steps. Clinicians at Sacred Heart are trained to treat co-occurring disorders, as long as the client has substance abuse as their primary diagnosis.
While Sacred Heart’s outpatient programs don’t require 12-step meeting participation, they do use a 12-step framework and the Flint location offers on-site meetings. Flint and Madison Heights also offer MAT for opioid addiction treatment. Richmond, Bay City, Flint and Port Huron offer Sacred Heart’s Women’s Specialty treatment. This program includes gender-specific processing groups as well as case-management and childcare services. The Algonac location currently only offers one-on-one counseling.
Extras
The Bay City, Flint and Saginaw locations provide confidential HIV/AIDS services including testing, case management, a food pantry and employment services.
In Summary
Sacred Heart’s outpatient treatment programs provide a range of evidence-based therapies and teach clients how to recovery using the 12-step framework. By offering several interactive therapy groups each week, clients can be assured they’ll leave treatment with a new perspective on their behavior and improved coping skills. Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center’s additional services—such as MAT for opioid addicts and women’s treatment tracks—provide additional support for opioid users and those who prefer a gender-specific environment.
