The Basics
Changing Tides Transitional Living in North Palm Beach, Florida is part of the Unity Recovery Group, which provides clients with a full continuum of care, including detox, inpatient and outpatient therapy. There are two residential facilities—one for men and one for women—each set in a private, comfortable and safe environment. Changing Tides offers access to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at the nearby Unity Recovery Center three times a week and daily access to 12-step meetings. The majority of residents are between 20 and 30 years old and are transitioning from inpatient treatment.
Accommodations and Amenities
Changing Tides’ two Florida-style, luxury condominium buildings can each accommodate a total of 20 to 25 people. No more than four people occupy a fully-furnished apartment, with two clients per bedroom and one shared bathroom. There are TVs in all bedrooms as well as in the living room of each apartment. Each spacious unit features a common area, living room and kitchen. Residents cook for themselves.
Other amenities include a free membership to a nearby gym and Wi-Fi, and residents are permitted to bring personal computers and cell phones. There are also on-site washers and dryers.
All apartments are within walking distance of bus routes, shopping, restaurants, 12-step meetings and potential employment opportunities.
Rules and Regulations
Accountability is stressed at Changing Tides, where there is 24-hour supervision. Residents should expect random drug screenings as well as testing before every IOP session. Clients are expected to attend IOP at least three times a week from 5:15 pm to 8:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as daily 12-step meetings.
Each resident is required to find employment or, if that’s not possible, to volunteer or attend classes or school. The philosophy at Changing Tides: Get up and out of the house! Be productive!
The typical length of stay here is between 30 and 45 days, although some clients choose to stay for as long as 90 days.
Extras
All therapists at Changing Tides and Unity Recovery Center have Master’s-level degrees. There is also a nurse on the roster of support staff. Career coaching is an added benefit of the program.
Free transportation is available to AA/NA meetings and to IOP at Unity Recovery Center. Additionally, there are weekly field trips for clients and volunteer activities.
In Summary
Even though Changing Tides boasts luxurious accommodations, that doesn’t mean its program to strengthen sobriety and prepare residents for the world outside of a treatment center is cushy. With an IOP that includes relapse prevention groups, emotional healing therapy and relationship recovery support, residents are provided with a no-nonsense approach to achieving long-term sobriety. The supportive atmosphere seems to be especially important for those clients under 30 years old for whom temptations in their age group loom large.
