turning pointThe Basics

As part of Western Montana Mental Health Center, Turning Point Addiction Services provides outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Located in the city of Missoula and situated along the Clark River, Turning Point is a comprehensive treatment facility that uses evidence-based practices to treat residents of Missoula County.

Treatment and Staff

The first step in treatment is an evaluation facilitated by a licensed substance abuse counselor. Once assessed, an individualized treatment plan is formulated and the client is placed in either the regular outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Individuals enrolled in the IOP should expect a minimum of nine hours per week of group therapy with an additional one hour per week for individual therapy. Clients meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for three hours and may choose between a morning session from 9 am until noon or an evening option from 6 pm to 9 pm. Sessions use CBT to discuss topics including the physical effects of addiction, identifying triggers, stress management, relapse prevention and group communication.

Regular outpatient clients meet twice a week for three-hour sessions.  Topics are similar to those in IOP with less frequency. Individual therapy is every other week for one hour and is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 pm to 6 pm. Group size is limited to eight people and typical duration for both IOP and outpatient is six weeks. While Turning Point treats clients with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, these individuals are referred to WMMHC for additional services.

The adolescent outpatient program at Turning Point is for young people between the ages of 12 and 17 with a primary substance abuse diagnosis. This group meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3 pm to 6 pm. Using CBT and DBT, clients discuss topics like peer pressure, addiction studies, relapse prevention and family dynamics. In addition to group sessions, there is one 60-minute individual session per week.

All groups are facilitated by CADCs and LADCs.

Extras

Turning Point has a gender-specific group for women dealing with trauma. Eligibility for this group is determined during intake.
