The Basics
Grace Recovery Centers of Tacoma, Washington is a CARF-accredited residential facility that offers substance abuse treatment for adults. The organization uses elements of the 12 steps in their step down program, which also includes an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and acute detox. Treatment consists primarily of group therapy sessions.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility known as the Cascade House is a six bedroom, 12-bed facility with three gender-specific shared bathrooms. All residents share bedrooms and maintain the common areas of the house, which includes the living room, kitchen and dining rooms. The facility provides all bedding, toiletries, towels, cooking and cleaning supplies.
Clients make weekly cooking and chore schedules and prepare all meals for each other. All food is included and there is a staff nutritionist who designs meal plans for residents to ensure healthy and delicious choices.
Treatment and Staff
The three-month program operates on a phase system that is broken into 30 day chunks. Clients may begin treatment in a five to seven day detox where they are monitored 24 hours a day before moving on to residential treatment. The first 30 days of treatment is the most intensive, with up to five hours a day of therapy. The second phase allows slightly more freedom and only three daily treatment hours. Weekend passes and personal cell phones are allowed in this phase. Finally, in the third phase residents are allowed to seek employment or volunteer, and is set up more as a sober living program than a residential one.
A typical day includes early morning meditation and breakfast at the house before clients are transported to the treatment facility for up to three group therapy sessions and addiction education lectures. Clients have a lunch break in between groups. Treatment includes 12-step work and groups that utilize CBT, DBT and relapse prevention techniques. The facility provides gender-specific groups for both men and women. There are also life skills and coping skills classes. After clients return to the residential facility, there is usually an evening AA or NA meeting they are required to attend. There are also weekly individual therapy sessions for all clients. Grace Recovery Center also has an IOP that is three hours a day for three evenings a week. This program is usually for clients who have completed the residential program.
The staff at the facility consists of 12 clinicians, among them medical doctors, LPNs, LCDCs, MFTs and massage therapists.
Extras
Treatment includes monthly adventure and recreational therapy practices and massage therapy. There are frequent trips to the local gym as well as weekend outings which include nature hikes, movie nights and shopping trips. Family members are allowed to make visits after clients have stabilized, and weekend passes are also available after the first 30 days.
Grace Recovery Center also provides a year-long aftercare program that meets weekly for group sessions that focus on coping skills and relapse prevention. A monthly two-day family program where family members of clients can spend the day participating in group session is also available.
