Santa Clarita CaliforniaThe Basics

Live Again Recovery Home is a residential treatment facility for men through the Grace Baptist Church in Santa Clarita, California. The church community began in 1961 as a small group in the Newhall area of the Santa Clarita Valley. In the mid-1980s, Grace Baptist Church began offering substance abuse treatment services through the Live Again Recovery Home. In 1991, the facility grounds officially opened to the public and began offering residential treatment for men seeking faith-based recovery. All treatment is based on a social model and bringing the residents together in a spiritual brotherhood.

Accommodations and Food

The Live Again Recovery Home is located on 25-acres of land similar to a campground. The grounds have sixteen cabins that accommodate up to 80 male residents at a time. Each cabin sleeps five residents in total with clients sharing two bedrooms—three in one bedroom and two in the other. Each cabin has its own bathroom, shower and space for storage of personal belongings. A large lodge is on the grounds that houses a recreation room, kitchen, dining area and meeting rooms for therapeutic activities.

Cooking staff provides breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks between meals, with coffee available throughout the day. Meals are typical American-fare comfort foods like spaghetti and meat dishes with salads and veggies served alongside. A large outdoor area with a barbecue pit is used for cooking dinners on the weekends. Clients regularly walk the grounds for exercise, hiking and socializing with other clients.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to treatment, clients must arrange a phone conference to be screened for admission. Potential residents must be male over 18 and have a willingness to stay sober and work hard at their recovery. Once admitted, clients meet with the treatment staff at the facility for a secondary assessment. The total length of treatment is nine months and clients must commit to staying for the duration to ensure that a stable recovery mindset is solidified. Each client meets with a case manager to develop a customized treatment plan and recovery goals and continues to meet with them as they progress through treatment.

Daily living at Live Again includes therapeutic activities throughout the day. Each day begins with breakfast and morning devotions at the church. Faith-based activities are non-denominational and optional for clients to participate, though they are highly encouraged to attend and to develop a strong spiritual foundation. After morning devotions, clients attend group therapy sessions. All programming is based on 12-step concepts and is focused on working through a social model of treatment. Closely aligned with the Minnesota Model, the social model stresses working in a group environment and treating addiction as a disease. In addition to group services, clients meet with counselors for individual therapy as needed.

After groups, clients have lunch in the cafeteria before attending recreational activities followed by more group sessions. Clients may exercise on the grounds or watch TV in the recreation room during free time. Dinner is served in the evening and then clients attend 12-step meetings facilitated on the grounds by alumni or community meetings off property. Clients are encouraged to seek sponsorship and work the twelve steps with their sponsor or an alumni member.

On the weekends, clients may attend Sunday morning church services or have visiting time with family after faith activities. All therapy is facilitated by a staff of alumni, many of which are CADCs or in the process of receiving their certifications.

Extras

The alumni community is a strong aspect of the Live Again recovery program. Meetings are held every week for clients and alumni to attend to offer support and assistance on their road to recovery.

Clients also regularly participate in activities off the grounds including going to movies, playing on a sober softball league through community recovery communities and having barbecues at the park.

In Summary

The Live Again Recovery Home is a residential program based on faith and the twelve steps. All clients must be committed to their recovery for the long term and stay for the entire nine months, maintaining their sobriety during the treatment process. Clients attend daily group and individual therapy as well as 12-step meetings. While the foundation of Live Again’s program is spiritual recovery, all church and devotional services are completely optional for residents to attend. The 25-acre property provides recreational space and the communal living arrangements promote brotherhood for residents to rebuild their lives and prepare for their return to the community.
