Royal Oak MichiganThe Basics

Founded by motivational trainer and counselor David Yates, GPS Counseling is an outpatient substance abuse counseling program that focuses on client-centered approaches and perspectives. With more than four locations across the state of Michigan, clients have access to over 22 years of experience and a network of professional resources and experienced staff to help them recover and find support. The substance abuse treatment program at GPS is exclusively outpatient and highly individualized.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment for substance abuse at GPS is client-centered, meaning that the structure of treatment and its methods are entirely based on the needs and desires of the client. After an initial diagnostic evaluation and assessment a unique plan is developed which determines frequency of treatment.

CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques are used during individual and group therapy as well as family counseling. Group sessions are scheduled throughout the week with evening and day-time options available to accommodate individual schedules. There is no set number of sessions that clients are required to attend, nor is there a pre-determined duration of treatment; instead counselors assist clients in determining the best path as they progress through the program.

The 12 steps are not integrated into the program, but clients are highly encouraged to attend outside of treatment. The staff at GPS consists of CADCs, MIs, LSWs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to the therapeutic program, GPS also offers a variety of other alcohol and substance abuse-related services and programs including driver’s license appeal division evaluations, drug and alcohol testing and ETG testing. Court evaluations are also made available to those clients with legal issues as are alcohol and drug education seminars for those clients and community members who wish to know more about the nature of addiction and substance abuse.

In Summary

GPS counseling offers basic outpatient treatment for those seeking flexible programming with an emphasis on individual client needs. Evidence-based methods are used during traditional therapy and specialized programs are available for court-mandated clients.
