Recovery Without Walls is an outpatient facility based out of Mill Valley, California that specializes in innovative treatments for alcohol and drug addiction in tandem with chronic pain. Holistic treatments are offered through pharmacology, psychotherapy, nutritional coaching and integrative healing methods to provide a path towards recovery that supports mental, physical and spiritual wellness. Treatment and Staff

As opposed to using a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment, Recovery Without Walls clients work with the clinical staff to develop an individualized treatment plan that both meets their unique needs and allows them to continue meeting their work, life and family obligations.

There is no minimum or maximum treatment duration or standardized approach to treatment. Prior to enrolling at Recovery Without Walls, potential clients schedule an appointment for a bio-psycho-social assessment with the staff. The assessment and screening determine the course of treatment and whether the client is in need of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) or additional therapeutic services.

While treatment at Recovery Without Walls is strictly outpatient, clients who have more intensive needs can be lodged at a local boutique hotel or private residence for the initial phases of their detox. A medical and nursing staff are present to provide encouragement and assistance during this critical time. Once clients show signs of stabilization, they begin psychotherapy and participation in other holistic treatment methods. Dual diagnosis support is available in the form of therapy sessions in tandem with medication management.

Clients attend both group and individual therapy during the course of their treatment. Therapeutic activities are facilitated by Master’s- and Doctoral-level practitioners. Staff credentials include MFTs, Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Medical Doctors (MD) who each offer their own dynamic approach to the treatment of addiction. The combined efforts provide a space for healing and overcoming the difficulties and mental blocks to recovery. Additionally, all clients are encouraged to supplement their treatment with 12-step meetings including AA/NA as well as Alanon for the family and loved ones.

Extras

Recovery Without Walls aims to treat the whole person—mind, body and spirit. Included in the treatment objectives are alternative therapies to assist the client towards total recovery. Meditation guidance is offered as well as massage therapy and exercise programs. Clients are also given nutritional guidance to improve their physical wellness and are given supplements and vitamins to restore the body’s function. Acupuncture therapy is also available to help minimize the need for prescribed pain medication that leads to dependence and abuse.

The Basics

New Life Recovery Services is an intervention and recovery coaching service provider located in Mary Esther, Florida. Joseph Novak, the founder and CEO of NLRS, is a Certified Intervention Professional (CIP), Nationally Certified Interventionist (NCIP) and Nationally Certified Recovery Coach (NCRC-I). Novak received training with two professionals from the A&E network show Intervention.

Prior to working in the recovery and intervention field, Novak served in the United States Air Force for two decades. He is a member of the Mental Health Association of Walton and Okaloosa County and is an associate at Emerald Coast Collaborative Solutions.

In addition to drug and alcohol intervention services, Novak also provides sex addiction and process addiction interventions. Staff interventionists and Novak are qualified to work with individuals with co-occurring disorders and will design a treatment plan that fulfills their dual diagnosis support needs.

The Background

New Life Recovery Services was founded in August of 2013 by Joseph Novak and he along with all interventionists on staff are in active recovery and are very open about their own addiction journeys.

The Approach

Novak and New Life Recovery Services provide interventions that are organized in a quick and surprise-oriented fashion. Staff are trained and knowledgeable in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT and utilize the Johnson Model and the ARISE and Systemic Intervention models.

Novak is on site for two days in total, meeting with family and the support team the first day and then executing the intervention the following day. The team at New Life Recovery Services has close relationships with area treatment facilities and detox programs. Interventions typically utilize the Johnson Model, but are tailored to meet the needs of the individual.

If the client accepts help, Novak and staff ensure each client is taken immediately to a treatment facility and is highly encouraged to attend 12-step meetings to supplement the recovery process. With multiple decades of recovery between staff members, the Novak and New Life Recovery uses the 12-step model of recovery as their foundation for helping families and individuals in need.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Joseph Novak and his team work with clients for as long as needed, the process ranging between weeks to months to a year. Recovery coaching is also available for clients wishing to continue their relationship with Novak and New Life Recovery. Families are connected and encouraged to attend Alanon meetings to preserve their own well-being. Whether the client relapses or finds long-term recovery, Joseph Novak is dedicated to planting the seeds towards the health of clients and their loved ones.

The Basics

ICM Associates of Boca Raton, Florida was founded by Kate Caravella, who serves as its current CEO. While the headquarters for ICM is based out of Florida, all services are available nationwide and internationally.

Providing intervention services for chemical dependency, eating disorders, gambling addiction, sex addiction and general mental health, ICM Associates is made of a team of professionals who guide families through the difficult process of seeking help. Due to Caravella’s experience, clients particularly seek her services for working with treatment resistant individuals. She also specializes in working with women, eating disorders, families in crisis and clients who have co-occurring disorders. She exclusively works with adults over the age of 18.

Caravella is the lead case manager and interventionist of ICM. She has worked in the mental health field for two decades and has experience with social work and women’s issues in tandem with addiction. Caravella’s credentials include Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC), Nationally Certified Addictions Counselor (NCAC), Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CDAC) and Certified Intervention Professional (CIP).

The Background

The original office of ICM Associates was first opened in August of 2001. After much success, Caravella and her team opened an additional office in 2003 in Madeira Beach. The intervention team is not openly in recovery but still dedicate their services to addicted populations and eating disordered clients.

The Approach

ICM approaches interventions with a team of two professionals, with staff and families working together to create an ideal and united intervention team. After an assessment with the family, the intervention team designs a private on-line portal which enables the family to stay connected. Treatment resources, communication lines and information are all included through the website. The private internet portal is open both throughout the treatment period and after to ensure the family stays connected and involved in the recovery process.

Prior to the intervention, the team meets with the family and loved ones to develop an intervention script using worksheets and guidebooks with support sessions to help develop scripts are available. A three- to four-hour rehearsal prepares the family for the actual intervention. The ICM team facilitates treatment by liaising with the agreed upon treatment facility, coordinating admission and transportation. Once the client agrees to treatment, the team stays in contact with the family and continues to support the individual.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Post-treatment support for the individual and the family is available. Time working with clients is not limited or restricted. Caravella and ICM staff are dedicated to seeing the entire recovery process through. For those interested in aftercare or sober living options, Caravella organizes a range of options. Twelve-step support is recommended for both the client and the family through Alanon and other support groups.

Located in Boulder, Colorado, Intervention Path to Recovery was founded by Jill Lopez, one of only two interventionists in Colorado to have earned the Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) credential. In addition to interventions, Lopez also offers recovery consulting services for those considering treatment plans or transitioning home after receiving treatment.

Lopez, a Board Registered Interventionist Level I (BRI-I), received a finance degree from University of Colorado at Boulder. She previously held management and training positions with agribusiness CHS, Robert Half Industries and Kaiser Permanente. She brings her wealth of experience in consulting, project and team management to her work as an interventionist.

The Background

Lopez began conducting interventions in 2003. She’s a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists and a member of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). In 2005, she helped found the National Center for Intervention, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the intervention process and making them affordable for all families.

The Approach

Lopez uses a variety of intervention models in her work which she customizes for each client’s needs. Her project management background enables her to choose the best participants for the intervention and effectively execute its moving parts.

Lopez generally conducts two coaching sessions with the family prior to the intervention and conducts an additional debriefing session with them following it. She works with clients and families to select the most appropriate detox, residential and outpatient treatment facilities. Lopez’s clients describe her approach is “even-handed,” “compassionate” and that she has “an excellent ability to meet clients where they are.”

Hourly consultations are also available for those who do not require intervention services. These educational sessions help loved ones to develop communication skills, set healthy boundaries, identify codependent behaviors and find an appropriate level of care for addicts and their families.

Jill Lopez has been conducting interventions since 2003. Her strong background in business and project management gives her the ability to assemble an effective intervention team and coordinate the several stages of the recovery process. Paul Gallant is the founder of Primary Recovery Services, a facility providing interventions, sober transport and companionship, case management and recovery coaching services. Located near New York City in Greenwich, Connecticut, Gallant and his colleagues travel throughout the world to assist clients find their way to recovery.

Gallant has been working in the recovery field since 1986 and was designated Addiction Professional of the Year from Caron Treatment Centers. He is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS).

The Approach

Gallant is known for his clinical expertise and ability to provide families and clients with extensive insight on choosing an effective residential or outpatient treatment program as well as detox facility. He meets with each family several times prior to the intervention and the support team is educated on the intervention process and the disease of addiction and are provided support and resources. Additionally, families are given the opportunity to rehearse the intervention prior to the procedure.

Gallant’s partner at PRS is Trevor Shevin. Serving as Director of Intensive Case Management, Shevin holds CIP and CASAC-T credentials, along with an MBA. Having previously worked on Wall Street, Shevin now runs specialized groups for executives struggling with addiction.

Additionally, Gallant’s wife Susan Gallant serves as PRS’s Director of Clinical Outreach. She received her MSW from Arizona State and has a background in child and adolescent advocacy and development for recovery organizations.

Post-Intervention and Summary

PRS also specializes in aftercare planning. Following the intervention, he stays in contact with families regarding continuing care planning, travel and family treatment. PRS suggests that clients and family invest in case management services after treatment to help the client transition home and avoid relapse.

Carol Lawyer has been a practicing interventionist since 1996. With offices in both West Chester, Pennsylvania and Surfside Drive, South Carolina, she is the founder of Intervention First, an intervention company designed to provide interventions and counseling to both families and individuals.

The Background

Lawyer has been in the intervention business since she graduated from Penn State in 1996. She has received many awards throughout her career including the 2002 Unsung Hero Award and the Canon Treatment Center 2008 Addiction Professional of the Year Award. Also from 2003 to 2007, Lawyer worked as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Association of Interventionist Specialists.

The Approach

Lawyer focuses on crisis intervention as well as crisis support services. The process begins with a brief phone call with the family or client to help assess the clients needs and help stabilize any possible crisis situations including the potential need for a detox. The next step is an in-person meeting where Lawyer goes over a specific action plan to address the intervention. The amount of time that lawyer spends with the family and client is dependent on the needs of the client, however Lawyer will not go into an intervention until she believes that all of the possible preparation work has been completed. Whether the intervention is surprise or invitational is based on the needs of the client. Lawyer always aims to place clients in treatment after the intervention.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Once the client enters treatment, Lawyer will continue to check in on both the client and client’s counselors to ensure that their treatment is on track. Lawyer also offers outpatient counseling out of the West Chester office that includes both group and individual therapy. She also provides counseling for family members to help them deal with co-dependency issues as well as assisting with the healing process.

Based in Memphis, Tennessee, interventionist John Barnes works for Caring Interventions, a company providing interventions to both families and individuals in the Memphis area. Barnes is completing coursework to become a licensed addiction counselor and is a candidate member of the Association of Intervention Specialists. Barnes has been in the intervention business for over 10 years. Barnes himself is an addict in recovery whose life was transformed when he experienced his own intervention. He uses his own experience to connect with clients and show them the benefits that come with a sober and healthy life.

The Approach

Barnes’s intervention prep time is extensive and includes a pre-intervention consultation with the family members and a screening for co-occurring disorders. Barnes approaches every intervention with an individualized plan, using models and practices that best fit the needs of the client. Whether the intervention is surprise or invitational varies based on the specific client’s circumstances.  He also invites anyone with a major vested interest in the client to participate in the client’s intervention, including parents, children, friends, siblings, close colleagues and religious community members. Everyone involved in the intervention receives training from Barnes on how to most effectively behave during the intervention and execute the plan that Barnes has created. Barnes’ ultimate goal is to place clients in treatment. He provides at least three clinically appropriate treatment provider recommendations at the time of the intervention.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Barnes provides up to six months of free coaching and consulting with the client and family members after the intervention. This coaching includes planning for accountability measures and long-term case management. Barnes also provides coaching and of support for the family members of the clients to help them deal with the physical, emotional and financial stress of the client’s addiction.

Based in the Pacific Northwest, interventionist Matt Brown is the founder and CEO of Freedom Interventions, a steadily growing intervention facility with offices in Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas, providing services to clients anywhere in the US. Since becoming an interventionist in 2006, Brown has expanded his efforts to include the creation of the No More Enabling website resource guide—to which he frequently contributes—as well as the Sober Portland website, which offers a plethora of recovery services to local residents. Brown is a Certified Arise Interventionist and frequently uses the model for interventions. While Freedom Interventions and Brown in particular are heavily invested in connecting people with recovery resources, the facility is solely oriented towards providing intervention services at this time.

The Background

For Brown, who is originally from Arizona, the business of interventions is a personal one. In 2001, his family tried to intervene in his own struggles with addiction, without the help of a professional. It took Brown another two years before he began his recovery journey and this experience shaped his desire to aid families in the intervention process. Brown’s sobriety is heavily influenced by the spiritual foundation of 12-step recovery and he spent his early years of recovery working in the intake department of a treatment facility alongside an on-staff interventionist. It was here Brown realized the importance of having a coordinator between family members, treatment staff and the client and thus began his interventionist journey.

The Approach

As previously mentioned, Brown employs the Arise method of intervention. This three-phase process is extremely family oriented and eschews surprise or coercion elements. Still, while the Arise method can stress a softer approach to intervention in many respects, Brown is very much a no-nonsense interventionist. Brown believes the family must be willing to commit to serious sanctions and enticements in an effort to wipe out any further enabling of the client. For Brown, explaining the consequences of continued using, including those from an employer or law enforcement when applicable, is a cornerstone to the process.

Typically, Brown begins the process with an initial phone call with family members to get a sense of the treatment goals and the desired plan for the client and quickly following this, travels to the family unit to conclude preparations in person.

Post-Intervention and Summary

For Brown, the period following the initial intervention is really where the work begins. Freedom Interventions provides case management with the facility while the client is in treatment. Brown also continues close contact with the family unit during the client’s treatment process, providing resources for education and support and is also on hand should a relapse occur.

It is perhaps in his long-term approach to treatment that Brown and Freedom Interventions most distinguish themselves in an ever-growing field. The facility provides a year of aftercare following the client’s time in treatment and this includes continued monitoring and case management, guiding the family through the important phase of recovery that directly follows treatment.

The Approach

Abrams draws on her range of credentials using numerous evidence-based approaches to treatment including Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT, family-systems therapy as well as the 12-steps. Abrams also works with clients who have not had success with AA/NA.

Other treatment modalities include psychodynamics, narrative therapy, gestalt and humanistic therapy. Abrams tailors her services to the individual, preparation for each intervention based on the specifics of their situation with varying methods. Abrams can also provide assistance with detox and works with clients who have dual diagnosis, mood disorders, impulse control disorders, grief, chronic pain and anger management issues.

In addition to couples and family counseling, Abrams is trained to work with adolescent clients between the ages of 11 and 19.

Post-Intervention and Summary

After the initial intervention, Abrams offers both aftercare and ongoing care with special attention for chronic relapsers. Duration of treatment programs vary and is usually determined by the client. Abrams also encourages families to get involved with Alanon to develop a peer-support group. With more than a decade of expereince in the field of substance abuse and interventions, Lisa Abrams’ approach to treatment is diverse with a specialized focus on younger clientele. Jennifer Randolph is a Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) who is also trained in the Arise technique of interventions, having studied with Dr. Judith Landau. She is also a CADC and Certified Trauma Professional (CTP). Ben Randolph is a Master’s-level CADC and has a long history of working in the mental health and addiction fields. In addition to help with drug and alcohol addiction, Compassionate Interventions provides intervention services for gambling, sex, pornography, internet and shopping addictions as well.

The Background

An Oregon native, Jennifer Randolph knows first-hand the spiral of addiction, having battled meth dependency following her high school years. After her own journey to treatment and what she calls a spiritual awakening, Jennifer Randolph became determined to dedicate her life to helping others find sobriety. She has been sober for over 15 years.

Ben Randolph has also walked his own journey of sobriety and draws on his 12-step recovery as a foundation for his work with clients. He is also a Navy veteran who has seen two Gulf War deployments and offers special PTSD-informed care to veterans who are also struggling with addiction.

The Approach

While Compassionate Interventions previously relied solely on the Johnson model of interventions, the Randolphs have expanded services to also utilize the Arise model and tailors their approach to each particular situation. Regardless of the method employed, the Randolphs begin each intervention with an initial phone consultation with the concerned family members and loved ones. Following this, an intervention plan is developed as well as any necessary travel arrangements. Clients are not charged for services until an intervention is planned.

Prior to the intervention, family and support individuals are involved in a day or two of planning, with the intervention typically scheduled for the following day. While the Johnson model involves a surprise intervention for the client with transportation to a treatment facility—and detox if needed—immediately following the intervention, the Arise model is invitational and typically consists of a three-phase process allowing for a second and even third intervention should the client fail to agree to the established treatment plan. Regardless of the approach, the goal is for a client to enter treatment, preferably at an inpatient facility.

Unlike many interventionists who are not affiliated with a treatment facility, the Randolphs operate the Oregon Trail Recovery facility which offers a residential treatment program. Clients who choose to enroll in this track participate in an intensive long-term program consisting of weekly group and individual therapy with a major 12-step recovery component. Still, the Randolphs and Compassionate Interventions always tailor a suggested treatment option to meet the needs and goals of the family unit.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Regardless of which treatment facility the family selects for their recovery needs, Jennifer and Ben Randolph support clients long-term and services include six months of continuing care for the entire family unit following the initial intervention. This continuing care includes monitoring and case management with the client’s treatment facility, as well as support and education for the family and support team, encouraging attendance at Alanon meetings and other useful recovery tools.

The Approach

The intervention process includes assessment, preparation and intervention. Hired Power incorporates different intervention models, including the Family Systemic Model and the Johnson Model. The Family Systemic Model incorporates the addict every step of the way, while the Johnson Model utilizes letter writing from the family to the addict, as well as providing evidence to the addict, which confirms that there is a definite problem that must be addressed. During preparation, family and friends are taught how to set boundaries.

Treatment referrals are included. At an additional cost, Hired Power offers safe passage for a client. A gender-specific recovery assistant works hands on to move the client from the intervention to detox or residential treatment. The recovery assistant helps pack a client’s belongings, provides transportation and much-needed support.

Post-Intervention and In Summary

At Hired Power, Nugent also offers monitoring and transitional care planning. Thanks to having a natural empathy, and excellent communication skills, Nugent has been able to conduct many successful interventions, as well as provide comprehensive case management.

At Millennium Counseling Center, clients receive individualized interventions, which are appropriate for their needs. The approach utilizes elements of the Arise intervention style. There is the belief that a client does not need to hit rock bottom before the family intervenes.

The process take place over the course of several days and includes an assessment, preparation and the actual intervention, which is conducted in a loving way and designed to avoid condemnation. The facility has extensive relationships with local psychiatrists and medical health providers. Residential treatment and detox referrals are provided.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Besides offering extensive therapy, clients who complete treatment are also provided an aftercare group, which helps them properly transition from inpatient care to day-to-day life. Those who do not compete treatment or relapse are treated on a case-by-case basis. At Millennium Counseling Center, staff is highly aware that clients might have co-occurring disorders, and is sensitive to their needs. This is an excellent option for clients who have underlying issues, and who need extra care.

The Basics

Located in the Boise suburb of Meridian, Idaho, Intervention 180 provides addiction interventions, sober companionship and monitoring services for alcoholics and addicts. Co-founder, CEO and Director of Intervention Services Thomas Burruel is a Bachelor’s-level therapist, social worker and interventionist. Burruel’s partner, Ben Seymour is a CADC and also serves as director of Ashwood Recovery. Intervention 180 includes clinical staff, board registered interventionists (BRI) and sober companions who provide services across the US, and in certain parts of Canada. Intervention services are also provided for those with severe mental health, eating, sexual addiction and co-occurring disorders.

The Background

Burruel was inspired to work in the recovery field after he witnessed his mother’s personal struggle with substance abuse and faced his own addiction issues. He uses his past experiences to help others, and has worked with the Department of Health and Welfare Child Protection a case manager and investigator as well as a social worker, performing crisis interventions in an emergency room. Burruel has also served in international relief efforts and donates his time public speaking at wilderness therapy camps for teens in the Pacific Northwest. Burruel, along with Seymour, founded Intervention 180 in 2006.

The Approach

Intervention 180 uses their unique “Intervention 180 Approach” which is a model that combines elements of all intervention methods. The interventions are highly structured and carefully planned to ensure success and safety for all involved. At Intervention 180, their is the belief that “not one method fits all,” and interventions are custom made to suit client’s needs. Additionally, they believe that surprise interventions don’t work for everyone, and often those requiring mental health, sexual addiction or eating disorder interventions need more than one intervention. Additionally, clients with a history of trauma undergo an invitational intervention. This takes about a month to prepare. By inviting the client to the intervention, the client feels empowered as opposed to feeling like a victim. They believe a surprise intervention could be quite damaging to that type of client.

During the first day, between one and two intervention professionals meet with the family and friends. In the case of executive interventions, co-workers also participate. The initial session lasts between six and eight hours. During that time, the participants learn about the disease of addiction, and what role they will play during the intervention. After that, the intervention is planned. During the second day, the group meets with the client, and conducts the procedure. After it is completed, a designated family member takes the client to a detox or residential treatment facility, which has already been selected by Intervention 180.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Besides sober companionship, Intervention 180 provides basic monitoring services, which vary per client’s protocol. They monitor outpatient and 12-step meeting attendance, therapy appointments, employment (if requested), random drug and alcohol screenings and regular phone contact with client.

More comprehensive than basic sober companion services, the Addiction Recovery Management Services (ARMS) program is offered for clients who suffer from perpetual relapse. ARMS includes discharge planning, a transitional care schedule, scheduled recovery support group meetings, outpatient and mental health referrals, and phone coaching. Staff schedules the recovery support group meetings, which include AA, NA, CODA and other 12-step groups.

Thomas Burruel offers comprehensive services and his “one size does not fit all” intervention method reflects a sense of empathy for the client. His high success rate shows his brand of compassion works.

The Approach

Smith uses an invitational intervention style. He describes his personal intervention technique as “specific, compassionate and solution focused” by uniting the family members, friends and loved ones to bring the gift of treatment to the client. The intervention process begins with the individual’s family members, loved ones, or co-workers contacting Smith for support. He then coaches the clients in what the intervention process looks like, and what to expect from the addict. Sometimes this initial stage is enough to get the client into treatment, though if not, Giff is able arrange the intervention and treatment arrangements. He communicates with the facility and the client to make the transition go smoothly.

Smith usually is in contact with the client and their families for a total of about six months. After the individual gets out of treatment there are counseling, life coaching services and aftercare. In addition, Smith can offer referrals for support groups, like Al-Anon, or counseling offered to the family and friends.

In Summary

Smith brings his many years of experience to compassionate intervention style. His style combines honesty tempered with kindness, showing the addict how they have affected those around them. This has proven to be successful with his clientele.

Based in Sandusky, Ohio, interventionist Tondra K. Frisby is a Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) who has owned and operated her own company, S.T.E.P. Interventions, since 2007. In the years since its founding, Frisby has steadily accrued a long list of credentials and commendations: she is certified by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board (OCDPB) as a Chemical Dependency Counseling Assistant (CDCA) and trained in the family meeting approach model for interventions at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery. In addition to her work as an interventionist, Frisby is also the program director at the Nehemiah Center—a church-sponsored organization that provides after-school care for children and adolescents in need.

When it comes to the intervention process, Frisby does not subscribe to any one particular method, preferring to determine what is called for in each unique situation. However, each case begins with Frisby meeting with family members ahead of time, usually with an initial phone call followed by one or two in-person meetings to determine the objectives and goals for the client and to address any questions or concerns the family may have. She also offers information about potential treatment facilities. Frisby’s commitment doesn’t end simply when a client enters an inpatient facility.

Post-Intervention and Summary

During the client’s time in treatment, Frisby continues to provide case management services and acts as a liaison between the family and the facility. Clients are provided transportation home or to a sober living facility following treatment. Additionally, while the client is in treatment, Frisby maintains an active connection with the family unit and both supports and encourages their own recovery journey through 12-step programs like Alanon and other support groups. With solid credentials and personal experience in recovery, Frisby’s intimate practice is ideal for individuals and families seeking reliable, long-term services.

The Approach

As a certified Arise interventionist, LaBelle employs those methods in conducting an intervention. The client is involved with the entire process from the beginning. There are no surprises here, and the philosophy is that clients don’t need to hit rock bottom before they get help.

The intervention includes a first call, and a first meeting. During the first call or Level One, a family member or concerned friend calls. The concerned individual is provided with communication coaching skills, aimed to get the client into treatment. Additionally, the first meeting, which includes the client, is scheduled. Approximately 56% of clients enter treatment after the first call.

Level Two includes the first meeting, and if necessary, several intervention meetings conducted between LaBelle, the family and the client. After this phase, 80% of clients enter residential treatment or detox. If all else has failed, level three includes an Arise intervention. During this time, clients are presented with serious consequences, if they refuse treatment. After level three, 83% enter treatment. Typically, the preparation time is between one and three weeks, followed by six months of supervision.

LaBelle assists in helping clients get into the proper level of care, including detox or residential treatment. Additionally, families and clients are provided with resources for finding recovery support groups including 12-step, SMART Recovery and Alanon.

In Summary

The ARISE Network provides a solid six-month continuum of care after a client enters residential treatment. This includes case management, relapse prevention planning and a family program. LaBelle’s approach towards intervention stems from maintaining respect and concern for the suffering client. His belief is that clients need to connect with their family of origin, as opposed to feeling like outsiders. Bonding with one’s culture is also vital in healing from addiction.

High profile interventions are offered, designed to maintain the privacy of celebrity clients whose scrutiny by the media can be detrimental to their sobriety. With almost three decades of solid experience and a compassionate approach, clients are in excellent hands should they choose LaBelle to conduct an intervention.

Located in the Southern California beach community of Marina Del Rey near Los Angeles, Lee FitzGerald is a CADC and a Board Registered Interventionist Level I (BRI-I) interventionist. She received her counseling certificate from UCLA after beginning her career in marketing. In addition to conducting interventions, FitzGerald currently serves at the Executive Director Western Region and International Development for the non-profit Caron Treatment Centers. FitzGerald believes that being of service is foundational to her success in recovery and in 2006 she founded Dristi Nepal, a non-profit drop-in center in Kathmandu, Nepal for substance abusing women to receive support and recovery information.

The Approach

FitzGerald employs The Johnson Model of interventions, an approach that involves direct confrontation of the addict after considerable interviews and preparation with his or her caregivers. FitzGerald’s method to guiding clients to sobriety emphasizes eliminating the negative effects of addictive behavior by shifting focus to the positive elements of each individual’s personality. Success of the intervention relies upon a group of individuals—typically the family and loved ones—who support the recovery process and reinforce these positive attributes.

FitzGerald’s methods are particularly effective for addicts whose caregivers are very involved in their lives. It also works for those with dual diagnosis as it can be effective with addicts who may not be capable of rational thought due to a mental health diagnosis.

In addition to Promises and Caron, FitzGerald recommends McLean Hospitals, Malibu Sober Living and Transcend Recovery Community. She is also a strong supporter of the 12-step framework and encourages clients to find fellowship and peer-support in the 12-step community.

Lee FitzGerald has been working with established recovery centers for a decade. Counes typically implements the ARISE model for interventions, but is knowledgeable on a range of alternate methods should it be determined that another would yield more desirable results. In addition to the invitational ARISE method, Counes and Palms Detox staff can also implement confrontational, medical or legal detox as needed.

Following the intervention, the client is admitted into detox followed by an appropriate treatment program. Although Counes does not himself provide sober companionship, he assists the client in finding support and provides case management as he or she progresses through treatment.

The Basics

Founded in 1983, Pennsylvania Counseling Services (PCS) began in the home of Dr. Roy A Smith. Through the years, the company has grown tremendously through the efforts of many and now consists of 17 clinics serving seven counties throughout south-central Pennsylvania. PCS offers outpatient treatment to adults and children struggling with addiction and mental health issues. The services at PCS include individual, group and family therapy. Dr. Smith serves as the CEO and directs the entire management team for all 17 clinics.

Treatment and Staff

PCS provides a nurturing environment for clients to achieve recovery, and as a multi-disciplinary practice, PCS offers a broad range of outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services for adults, children and their families. An initial assessment of the client’s specific history and needs forms the basis for an individualized treatment plan. Most plans consist of a combination of individual and group therapy which are usually scheduled as one- to three-hour sessions, four to six days a week. This therapy is CBT-based and treatment is conducted by staff members who are CSAC, CADC and CASAC credentialed. Clinics also have an LPN, psychologist and social worker on-site. Co-occurring disorders are also treated.

Part of the aftercare provided by PCS is access to the Lebanon Recover Center. The Center provides programs for those clients now in the recovery community to assist in rebuilding their lives, including vocational training, education opportunities, job counseling, computer and telephone access, life skills groups, relapse prevention and 12-step meetings.

Extras

In addition to the above mentioned services, PCS also provides specialized treatment for eating disorders, sexual addiction, anger management, ADHD, depression, anxiety and play therapy.
