The Basics
Addiction and Behavioral Counseling Services (ABCS) has provided drug and alcohol addiction treatment since 1999. With two facilities located in Merrillville and Kentland, Indiana, ABCS offers both outpatient treatment and substance abuse education programs. Services are available for court-ordered and self-referred clients, as well as for those with co-occurring disorders. Treatment includes evidence-based practices through individual and group therapy.
Treatment and Staff
Though ABCS does not currently have detox at either of its outpatient facilities, these services are scheduled to be added on-site soon. Those who wish to enter outpatient treatment must first complete an OWI evaluation and assessment to form individualized treatment plans. Self-referred clients work with staff to determine what combination of individual and group therapy best suits their needs. Groups take place in six-week cycles with a different topic each week, and each group is run by one assigned therapist.
Groups are comprised of both educational sessions and evidence based therapy, including CBT and Choice Therapy. Depending on the client, group therapy can meet anywhere from one to six times a week. Each session is billed individually. Typically speaking, each course of therapy lasts six to eight weeks with clients attending two to three times weekly. The staff at ABCS is made up of CADCs and therapists.
Group topics include anger management, risk management, addiction treatment, relapse prevention and substance abuse education. Group therapy sessions focus on co-occurring disorders, risk identification and adolescent issues for the Minor in Possession Program (MIP).
Extras
Additionally, ABCS offers MIP Workshops as part of a substance abuse treatment program for adolescents. The program requires two days of substance abuse education with four hours of classes each day. The program works in accordance to the Lake County Prosecutor, Bernard Carter. ABCS also works with schools to address student athletes who have violated school and athletic substance abuse codes.
In Summary
Overall, Addiction and Behavioral Counseling Services emphasizes early intervention and the educational aspect of substance abuse treatment. Length and intensity are flexible because all programs are highly individualized, with evidence-based care used to process clients’ internal struggles in both individual and group contexts. In all, ACBS is an affordable and relatively low intensity program, and a good resource for those in the region.
