griffin georgiaThe Basics

A CARFaccredited public institution created by the Georgia legislature in 1993, McIntosh Trail Community Service Board provides mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services to residents in seven counties including Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson. The short-term inpatient facility and main headquarters are located in Griffin, a small city in the middle of the state. The organization also offers long-term outpatient care to adults and adolescents.

Accommodations and Food

Because McIntosh Trail’s residential substance abuse services are held at a crisis stabilization center and extremely short-term (typically lasting three to five days), their accommodations are somewhat limited. While not technically a hospital, the one-story facility which resembles a series of cabins mirrors the layout of a hospital building, with clients sharing rooms in a lock-down facility. Residents have one roommate in rooms with twin beds, basic furnishings and a private bathroom. Three hot meals are provided in the cafeteria by McIntosh Trail’s staff. Again, given that clients spend the majority of their stay in medical detox, there are no recreational or social activities provided during their tenure.

Treatment and Staff

A client’s stay at McIntosh Trail CSB’s begins with detox supervised by a medical doctor and nursing staff, with visits from a staff psychiatrist. Residents have access to medication management and dual diagnosis care when necessary as well. While in residence, clients participate in group and individual therapy sessions led by LADCs and have individual case managers with whom they can meet during the week.

Clients have the option to step down to outpatient care, as the facility also provides general substance abuse recovery services in each of their locations to both adults and adolescents. These programs offer both group and individual therapy sessions several times a week. Each meeting typically lasts for three hours and the program lasts for 17-24 weeks. Clients can also expect ongoing nursing and psychiatric services, court-ordered evaluations, multiple offender evaluations, risk reduction classes, family sessions and anger management programs.

Extras

A major feature of McIntosh Trail’s program is its array of services for those with developmental disabilities. Clients in each of the seven counties can participate in the Community Access program which assists clients with improving social and life skills, the Prevocational program which prepares individuals for pending employment, the Supported Employment program for those already employed and a variety of community residential programs as well as at-home care for clients. Comprehensive outpatient services exclusively for mental health issues are available as well.

In Summary

While residential treatment at McIntosh Trail is brief, it does offer a medical detox, access to a medical team and general outpatient recovery support services. Furthermore, given the facility’s wide-reaching programs throughout Georgia, clients can expect an easy transition into a long-term outpatient track through one of the organization’s many locations. While those looking for long-term inpatient care may need to look elsewhere, many should be well served by McIntosh Trail CSB’s services.
