Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2014 in Los Angeles, California, by CEO Sherrie Jemison, People in Progress provides sober living for men, with a focus on criminal justice and financially challenged clients, as well as veterans. Jemison is a certified addiction specialist for a forensic co-occurring disorders treatment agency serving Skid Row in Los Angeles. The mission of People in Progress is to help recovering alcoholics and addicts who need safe and secure housing so that they can rebuild their lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

People in Progress is comprised of two duplexes, each accommodating ten clients, with a total of twenty residents. Residents are paired in carpeted rooms, which include twin beds, dressers, a closet and an Asian screen divider between the beds, allowing for privacy. There are no more than four men sharing one bathroom. Amenities include Cable TV, Netflix, landline, Wi-Fi, laundry facility, paper products, free weights, house computer, backyard patio with BBQ grill and a game room. All utilities are paid.

Dinner is provided from Mondays to Thursdays, and prepared by the house manager who lives on the premises. Residents are also welcome to prepare their own meals. Typical entrees include stuffed chicken with dressing, steak, pork roast, turkey wings, pasta, pot roast, mashed potatoes, veggies and bread. Other food items offered include oatmeal, eggs, bread, oil, seasonings, condiments, rice, macaroni and cheese, onions, coffee, cream and sugar. Frozen foods, milk, ice cream are not provided.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must pass a drug and alcohol screening. Weekly requirements include completion of one or two household chores, attendance at two 12-step meetings and maintaining a respectable demeanor. Clients must attend outpatient care, work, participate in community service or attend full-time school. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Clients undergo random drug testing. Relapsed clients are dealt with on case-by-case basis, and a lot of factors are taken into account. If the client is willing to work on his recovery, he must attend a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings. If the client possesses a negative attitude, he is evicted immediately to ensure the safety of the entire household. Clients who remain clean and sober, but have an unhealthy attitude are given until the end of the month to find new housing.

Extras

People in Progress is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.

In Summary

Jemison founded this sober living home to give a second chance to financially challenged men who are serious about their recovery. The house thrives on maintaining a serene and nurturing atmosphere, and offers a great opportunity to men who are seeking a second chance at life.
