The Basics
The Biedenharn Family Treatment Program was founded 1958 in Bossier City, Louisiana. The program offers residential treatment for pregnant women and women with children aged 12 and under. The program operates under the umbrella of the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana (CADA), an organization that has provided substance abuse and addiction treatment for over 50 years. With short-term residential treatment and detox at the Bossier Treatment Center and a high-intensity inpatient adolescent track at Cavanaugh Treatment Program, treatment is evidence-based incorporating both traditional therapy and the 12 steps.
Accommodations and Food
The Biedenharn Family Program accommodates clients at the CADA Bossier Treatment Center, a former nursing home that has been renovated into a residential treatment facility. The women have their own wing and individual rooms that they share with their children. Each room has a twin bed for one adult and one or two beds for their children. The program can accommodate up to seven women and seven children.
The facility has an on-site cook who prepares three meals a day and who accommodates dietary restrictions and needs. The building also has a number of counseling rooms where adults and children are treated.
Although the building does not have a fitness room or gym, clients are required to complete at least one hour a day of physical activity at a nearby community center that has a gym and basketball court.
Treatment and Staff
The Biedenharn Family Program lasts for 90 days and consists of individual and group therapy. The program is highly structured, with the women starting their day at 6 am and ensuring their children are up by 7 am and off to school. After that, clients have a mediation group followed by a life-skills and life-planning group meeting.
Clients then attend a morning group meeting that utilizes CBT and incorporates education, relapse prevention and occasionally process group therapy. In the afternoons, clients attend a group meeting before picking their children up from school. In the evenings, residents eat dinner and spend quality time with their children prior to going to bed. The women are also assigned daily chores to help with the upkeep of the facility.
Clients attend one AA/NA group a day. Although most of the program is group based, individual counseling is available depending upon the needs of the clients. Biedenharn does not offer dual-diagnosis support, however if the clients have co-occurring disorders they are referred to CADA’s office of behavioral health.
The program is overseen by a small group of LADCs. Biedenharn also has a child psychologist who provides individual and group counseling for children of the clients.
Summary
The Biedenharn Family Treatment Program is ideal for women with children who need residential treatment. The program is tailored for women to not only overcome their addiction issues but also develop parenting and life-skills in order to foster well-rounded women ready for the responsibilities of daily life. The free cost of the program opens the door to all women.
