The Basics
Founded in Sacramento, California in July 2015 by friends in recovery, Monarch Clean and Sober Living Homes provides structured co-ed living for clients in recovery from chemical dependency. Founders Scott E. and Joseph B. have been clean and sober since 2012, and 2010, respectively. The facility’s name is inspired by the butterfly, as is evident by images of butterflies on the website. Their mission is to provide newly clean and sober men and women a serene milieau for self-transformation, which parallels the metamorphosis that a caterpillar undergoes prior to becoming a beautiful winged creature.
Accommodations and Amenities
Monarch Clean and Sober Living Homes operates two houses, with locations in Carmichael and midtown Sacramento. The Carmichael home accommodates eight clients while the midtown house is a newly renovated Victorian with an 11-bed capacity. Each residence also has a live-in house manager. Residents are paired in gender-specific rooms, which feature full or twin sized beds, framed artwork, a nightstand and closet.
The Carmichael house is huge, and includes five bedrooms, a living room, a spacious kitchen, huge bathrooms and a large yard. The three-story Victorian has double-occupancy rooms except for the attic, which was converted into a loft. The attic accommodates four clients, and includes a large TV, entertainment center, bathroom and outdoor patio for smokers. Furnishings are eclectic yet tastefully arranged. At Monarch Clean and Sober Living Homes, there are earth toned couches, Oriental rugs, Tiffany lamps and glass tables.
At Monarch Clean and Sober Living Homes, residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Amenities include Cable TV, Wi-Fi, ample storage space, flat screen HDTV’s, laundry facilities and parking.
Rules and Regulations
At Monarch Clean and Sober Living Homes, potential clients must have completed detox. All clients must attend recovery support meetings. Those who are employed work out a weekly meeting quota with staff, while unemployed clients must attend a daily meeting. Besides AA/NA, clients are encouraged to seek a recovery support group that works for them. This includes SMART Recovery, Life Ring and Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist oriented recovery program.
During the first 30 days, clients must sleep at their house. No overnight visits are allowed. Other requirements include participation in household chores, attendance at the house meeting, maintenance of a working relationship with a sponsor or counselor and adherence to good manners.
Clients are strictly forbidden from engaging in intimate relations with other housemates. The curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. Additionally, random drug and alcohol screening is conducted, and clients who have relapsed are immediately removed from the premises.
