El Futuro

The Basics

El Futuro is a unique outpatient-based counseling facility for substance abuse and mental health issues. With locations in Durham and Siler City, North Carolina, El Futuro offers Spanish speaking immigrants a home with culturally informed behavioral health treatment. Treatment options include assessments, individual, group and family therapy. Support for co-occurring disorders is available as is trauma treatment.

Treatment and Staff

El Futuro treats adult and adolescent substance abuse through individual and group therapy. Each client must undergo an assessment in order to determine what kind of treatment is necessary. While detox services are not available on-site, referrals can be made whenever necessary.

Clients can participate in either group or individual therapy or both depending on their needs. Groups are offered on a weekly basis, covering topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills and mental health issues. Individual sessions are each an hour long and typically take place on a weekly or bi-monthly schedule. Rather then relying on the 12 steps, the therapies used here include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), interpersonal psychotherapy, parent child interaction therapy and trauma-informed therapy.

Family therapy is also available. Each of these hour-long sessions allow family members to express themselves in a supportive environment. Family involvement typically increases each client’s chance at long-term sobriety. Support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can be addressed during therapy. In addition, those in need of medication have access to a psychiatrist.

The staff consists of LADCs, psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, Master’s-level therapists and CADCs. Group sizes range from eight to 10 people at a time.

Extras

In addition to the above, El Futuro is able to offer parenting, social skills and DBT skills classes. DUI assessments and alcohol and drug education traffic school are also available.

In Summary

Overall, El Futuro offers substance abuse treatment rooted in a variety of proven therapy methods. Through a mixture of individual and group therapy, clients can learn healthier ways of coping with stress. While what’s offered is still fairly basic, El Futuro is a good option for those in need of a lower intensity program with Spanish speaking support.
