Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded seven years ago in Los Angeles, California by David Wohlman, who is in recovery, Uncle Dave’s Housing provides low cost transitional living for financially challenged men, catering primarily to criminal justice clients. Their mission is to provide safe and secure housing so that clients can regain their self-esteem and get back on their feet.

Accommodations and Amenities

Uncle Dave’s Housing operates four facilities, including three duplexes and one four-unit apartment building, which is located near public transportation. Approximately 110 clients are accommodated between all four locations. The men are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds, a television and storage space.

The houses each include a fully equipped kitchen. While residents are responsible for their own groceries, many qualify for food stamps and general relief. Additionally, Uncle Dave’s Housing works closely with a pilot program which funds a percentage of rental costs, for qualified low-income clients. Amenities include all utilities, laundry facilities, Direct TV and Wi-Fi.

Rules and Regulations

As a non-profit 501(C)3 organization, Uncle Dave’s Housing typically caters to disabled clients, US veterans and elderly men. Clients range between the ages of 19 and 65. Prior to admission, potential clients must pass an alcohol and drug screening. Length of stay is typically between six months to a year.

At Uncle Dave’s Housing, the performance of household chores is required. However, the houses operate on a fairly loose structure. While many residents, and Uncle Dave himself, participate in an AA/NA/CA fellowship, the attendance of 12-step meetings is not mandated. Additionally, there is no set curfew, and residents are allowed to come and go as they please.

Since the facility practices a zero tolerance policy, clients are subject to additional drug and alcohol testing. Relapsed residents are evicted immediately from the premises. Other no-no’s include stealing, violence and sexual conduct. Such behaviors guarantee that the offender will be dismissed from the premises.

Extras

The houses each include a patio with a barbecue and recreation rooms. Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas.

In Summary

Former clients have raved about Uncle Dave, saying that he is a man who really cares about the well being of his residents. The houses are also well maintained and immaculate. For financially challenged men, who are seeking a safe and secure transitional living facility, Uncle Dave’s Housing is an excellent supportive community.
