The Basics
Founded four years ago in Woodland Hills, California by Bruce Abild, Alexander House provides safe and secure sober living for men. The house offers a family-style setting and Abild maintains objectives, helping clients stay focused on their goals while they practice a 12-step based recovery protocol.
Accommodations and Amenities
Alexander House boasts a sleek, contemporary exterior and is located on a quiet, residential street. The 2,223 square foot house accommodates no more than ten clients, not including Abild, who is also the live-in house manager. Alexander House has a spacious living room with a fireplace, a dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, a family room where meetings are held, two bathrooms, and a reception area.
The master bedroom has two bunk beds and holds four clients. The remaining residents are paired in doubles furnished with twin beds. All of the rooms include dressers, nightstands, lamps and closets. Fresh towels are provided daily. The house has a large backyard with a covered patio and a barbeque for grilling.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Amenities include laundry facilities, Cable TV, Wi-Fi, central air and heating, and bed linens. The house is located in close proximity to Los Angeles Pierce College, 12-step meetings, public transportation, West Valley Occupational Center and a shopping mall. Just a short drive away, is Lake Balboa Park, which includes a lake and scenic bike paths.
Rules and Regulations
Prior to admission, clients must have undergone detox. At Alexander House, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. While the house maintains a zero tolerance policy, and relapsed clients are immediately dismissed from the premises, some men are allowed to return after an interval of abstinence.
Alexander House also practices zero tolerance regarding verbal or physical abuse, or stealing. Requirements include attendance at five weekly 12-step meetings, participation at the house meeting, and performance of household chores. Additionally, they must have meeting cards signed by an AA/NA/CA meeting secretary to show proof of attendance. The Wednesday night house meeting allows residents an opportunity to discuss household issues, provide feedback to peers and offer support. Clients are expected to be out of their beds by 8:30 am Mondays through Fridays.
Extras
Alexander House is a member of The Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.
