The Basics
Brookside Community Health Center provides outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment for adults living in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. While the bilingual medical and professional staff primarily accommodates Spanish speakers in CBT driven group therapy, individual sessions are available for both English and Spanish speakers. There is also psychiatric medication management offered to those with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
All new clients undergo an assessment with an intake specialist to develop individualized treatment plans. Through this process, clients are matched with counselors with whom they meet for individual therapy. Spanish speakers have the option to attend group therapy as a supplement to these individual sessions. Typically clients meet with their counselor once or twice a week for at least an hour long each session. Those in need of support for co-occurring disorders are offered integrated recovery plans and psychiatric medication management services from an on-site staff psychiatrist.
Spanish group therapy sessions are offered twice a week, each lasting an hour and a half. Groups are held on Mondays from 4 to 5:30 pm and on Fridays from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Each Monday a counselor leads a discussion and educational session about substance abuse. During this time, clients also learn about the disease model of addiction. The Friday groups alternate between an open discussion aimed at helping adults identify triggers that lead to relapse and a lecture on relapse prevention. Clients attending substance abuse groups typically also engage in weekly individual sessions—though they are not mandatory.
Participation in a 12-step program is not required, though highly encouraged. There are no on-site meetings available, but staff members refer clients to local meetings upon request.
Staff members at BCHC include LADCs and a psychiatrist. The main techniques used for treatment are evidence-based modalities like CBT and traditional talk therapy.
In Summary
At Brookside Community Health Center, adults are offered basic outpatient mental health and substance abuse services. With treatment primarily catering to Spanish speakers, BCHC, individual sessions are available in English as well. While clients requiring more than basic outpatient services may benefit from a facility with an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a residential track, BCHC caters to individuals seeking traditional therapeutic care using evidence-based methods and medication management.
