Paynesville MinnesotaThe Basics

A non-profit outpatient chemical dependency treatment organization, Serenity Path provides services about 30 miles west of St. Cloud in the small town of Paynesville, Minnesota. The facility offers education services for the community, as well as treatment for those suffering from substance abuse, addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Serenity Path is based on the 12-step Minnesota Model, which requires clients to be abstinent from all drugs and alcohol for the course of the program. Clients are allowed certain prescribed medication, though most mood-altering medications are prohibited. A doctor is available on-site to provide medication management, and additional support for clients requiring dual diagnosis support. Serenity does not offer detox, but referrals can be provided if needed.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) follows a three-hour chemical use assessment that explores the client’s needs. The program then includes a six-month plan, consisting of both group therapy and individual therapy for a total of around 10 hours per week. Both evening and day sessions are available, adding convenience for anyone whose schedule is a little packed.

One-on-one sessions are conducted each week with Serenity’s LADCs for one to three hours—depending on the client—whereas group therapy makes up seven to nine hours of the weekly schedule. Additional group treatments with licensed counselors are also available outside of the core program, focusing on spirituality, family support, self-esteem building and relapse prevention.

Extras

One three-hour aftercare session per week is provided for free once the program is completed, and although it’s recommended for three months, Serenity stresses that clients can continue to attend for as long as they wish. Serenity provides a 50-hour relapse program for former clients who haven’t been able to maintain sobriety and it’s a testament to Serenity that enrollment for this program is very low.

Serenity Path supports the community with outreach initiatives—including business and school talks. These efforts help open a dialogue on the risks and realities associated with chemical dependency with those who might not otherwise understand.

Serenity also provides multiple levels of DUI/DWI education, which focus on individual responsibility and help strengthen commitments to changing the patterns of negative decision-making.

 In Summary

Offering no frills but plenty of support, Serenity Path could be a great fit for those looking to break addiction without shelling out much. Its IOP is especially suited for those who prefer a group setting, and the additional educational support makes Serenity Path useful not only to the individuals who enroll in its program, but also to the wider community.
