The Basics
Located northeast of White Bear Lake in the Minneapolis suburb of Mahtomedi, Minnesota Lake Shore Men’s Residential is a program offered by Meridian Behavioral Health. Now open for over 10 years, Lake Shore accepts male adults ages 18 and over. The curriculum is gender-specific and trauma-informed. Twenty-four hour medical services are provided as is dual-diagnosis support for those with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The Lake Shore house looks like a family home, tucked away in a wooded area. It offers space for 23 beds. Clients usually share a dorm-style room with one or two other people. A clinical center and the on-site facility that houses one of Meridian’s female-only programs (Cedar House) is found nearby. The main Meridian building in the middle between the two residences is available for group therapy, family visitations and dining. All meals are included in the cost of stay at Lake Shore and served cafeteria style. However, the clients are permitted to bring a small amount of snacks with them.
Treatment and Staff
To be admitted into the residential treatment program it is required that clients have their official chemical assessment faxed or otherwise sent to Lake Shore administration. Each client gets assigned a personal counselor on his first day at the house. The Lake Shore Program offers CBT-based group therapy sessions to its clients throughout the day at a frequency determined by each client’s individualized treatment plan. Residents also attend on-site 12-step meetings and addiction education classes. The men may not bring cell phones to treatment and the center does not permit internet access. Facility phones are available for out-going calls to family.
The Lake Shore is run by a psychiatrist who serves as program director while admissions are arranged by the CSW admission coordinator. There are five to six LADCs on-site with whom clients meet on daily basis and who take turns running group meetings. There is no minimum length of stay at Lake Shore and the cost is $700 per day.
Extras
For recreation, residents use the on-site basketball and volleyball courts and take walks on the facility’s grounds. After seven days in treatment, residents may receive adult visitors on weekend afternoons. Clients may also go on outings with other clients—solo trips are not permitted.
In Summary
As part of a larger health organization, Lake Shore Men’s Residential can boast stability and a history of successful treatment. The lakeside location is location similarly charming. For men seeking a program with over a decade of history that provides individualized treatment at a reasonable rice, this is a good choice.
