plattsburgh new yorkThe Basics

Behavioral Health Services North, Inc. was founded in 1847 as a facility for orphans and abandoned children. Located near Lake Champlain in upstate New York, BHSN has evolved into a network of 14 facilities currently offering an array of behavioral health services for children, adults, and their families throughout Northern New York state. BHSN owns and operates Twin Oaks, a residential treatment program for adult men in recovery. Twin Oaks provides men with structure and a recovery plan that includes individual and group therapy sessions along with 12-step participation.

Accommodations and Food

Twin Oaks is situated in a pleasant residential neighborhood in Plattsburgh, New York. The home is a spacious, two-story traditional farmhouse with shutters, a large covered porch and a grassy front yard surrounded by trees. Inside, décor is modern with neutral colors and furnishings creating a homey environment conducive to healing. Twin Oaks has space available for 20 men in shared rooms with twin beds, dressers, desks and closet space. Clients also share full bathrooms with housemates. There is a large living room, formal dining room and a fully equipped kitchen as well as on-site laundry facilities. Residents have a rotating list of chores which include washing the dishes, cooking meals and cleaning bathrooms and common areas.

Staff members do the grocery shopping at Twin Oaks and residents take turns preparing all three meals for the house served family-style. Breakfast usually consists of ham and eggs or cold options like cereal, yogurt and fruit. Lunch and dinner meals are served hot and include a variety of Asian, Italian and American dishes. All grocery fees are included in the rent.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Twin Oaks lasts six months and focuses on recovery and employment readiness. All clients are required to obtain a referral for treatment and must undergo an evaluation to develop a proper plan of action. All clients are given individualized treatment plans, but as members of the Twin Oaks recovery community, they must abide by general regulations. Residents with co-occurring disorders are provided with medication management through the psychiatrist at the BHSN outpatient facility.

Residents are required to be up before 7 am, after which they share a group breakfast. Various group and individual sessions are attended throughout the day. Aside from in-house meetings, clients are shuttled to groups held at the BHSN outpatient facility. Residents attend different groups depending on their needs, but options typically include psychoeducationdual diagnosis focus, anger management, relapse prevention, addiction as disease and an introduction to the 12 steps. Typically, all 12-step meetings are held off-site. After a few weeks in the program, clients are required to obtain a sponsor to help them work the steps.

Individual sessions are scheduled as needed but are usually attended at least once a week for an hour at a time. Those who need more one-on-one therapy may schedule additional sessions. During the last months of treatment, counselors focus on addressing vocational goals during individual sessions.

Staff members at Twin Oaks include LADCs, CSWs, LPCs, overnight staff and a psychiatrist. Counselors use evidence-based modalities including CBT during therapy.

Extras

BHSN also offers clients a variety of other programs, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for dual diagnosis support known as PROS (Personalized Recovery Oriented Services) and consists of weekly group and individual therapy. Frequency of group attendance depends on each individual’s needs, though groups are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Domestic violence services include a 24-hour hotline as well as a Violence Intervention Program (VIP) for men. The program is 33 weeks long, with attendance of group sessions once a week for two hours at a time. This program focuses on the tools needed to change abusive behaviors. The facility also provides affordable housing, housing for mentally ill, a 24-hour suicide hotline and domestic violence services.
