Portland MaineThe Basics

Founded in 2012 by Corey Gamberg and Joe Curran, who are both in recovery, Hillview Sober Living provides a 12-step-based living environment to newly clean and sober men. Located in Portland, Maine, Hillview Sober Living is right in the middle of a thriving recovery community.

Accommodations and Amenities

The quaint yellow-shingled Victorian-style house with white trim is situated in a picturesque residential neighborhood. Hillview Sober Living lodges 13 clients, who typically range between 21 and 40 years of age. The men are housed in single, double or triple-occupancy rooms, which are comfortably furnished with twin beds, dark wood dressers and night lamps. The main floor includes a cozy living room with leather couches.

While clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation, there is ample cooking and storage space. There are three fully equipped kitchens that include quaint country-style tables and chairs. Coffee, paper supplies and cleaning products are provided. Amenities include handicap access, all utilities paid, laundry facility, Wi-Fi, house computer, gym membership, flat screen TVs with Cable and ample off street parking. A house manager lives on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have undergone a minimum of 28 days of primary care at a drug rehab. During the first 30 days at Hillview, residents must attend a minimum of five weekly 12-step meetings and be present at two mandatory house meetings, which are held on Thursday and Sunday evenings. Residents must find a home group, and attend one of the required meetings there. During this time, unemployed clients must obtain full-time work, pursue an academic education or participate in community service.

During the first 30 days, the curfew is 10 pm. After this period, the curfew is bumped up to 11 pm and clients must attend three weekly 12-step meetings, including one with their home group. House meetings are still mandatory. Other requirements include performance of household chores, participation in household activities, and maintenance of good relations with housemates, neighbors and the community. At Hillview Sober Living, random drug and alcohol testing is conducted and a zero tolerance policy is enforced. Relapsed residents are immediately evicted from the premises. Other forbidden behaviors include physical abuse, vandalism and any other disrespectful conduct.

Extras

The Hillview team, which is comprised of current and former residents, participates in the Portland Sober Sports League.

In Summary

The men of Hillview Sober Living are definitely part of a brotherhood. They do many activities together, plus provide each other with a strong support network, which can often be quite healthy for men who are newly clean and sober. For clients seeking such an ambience, plus the opportunity to live in picturesque Maine, with the beach only a walking distance away, Hillview Sober Living is the perfect place.
