The Basics
Founded in 1969 as a community mental health center, Canvas Health has since grown to be one of the largest private non-profit providers of mental health and substance abuse recovery support in the state of Minnesota. With over 10 branches in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul, CH offers a rich network of resources and professionals for both adults and adolescents seeking outpatient mental health care and substance abuse treatment. With both individual and group therapy, CH employs traditional counseling services using evidence based treatment methods.
Treatment and Staff
CH offers a basic outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents. The adult program, New Choices for Recovery, starts with an initial assessment allowing counselors to develop an individualized treatment plan that best suits the needs of each client. All treatment integrates CBT-based group and individual therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-steps. The individualized planning dictates the frequency of each type of treatment and whether or not treatment for co-occurring disorders should be included. The length of the program is determined by the progress of the client; there is no set limit. Topics discussed in group sessions include relapse prevention, coping skills, independent living skills and self-esteem building.
The adolescent substance abuse track is a long-term intensive program for at-risk youths—many who are homeless or having legal trouble. This program includes intensive case management, CBT-based group and individual therapy sessions, consultations and family sessions.
The staff at CH consists of consists of LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs.
Extras
In addition to their treatment services, CH also offers sober living environments for clients seeking to continue their recovery upon completion of treatment. There are both permanent and short-term housing services for chemically dependent homeless parents and their children. On-site case managers aim to help clients get treatment for chemical dependency as well as developing self-sufficiency. Legal help, transportation services, vocational counseling and parenting skills groups are also available for those who need or want it.
There is an additional adolescent counseling program tailored for the specific needs of young people who are transitioning from the local juvenile center back into their homes. Treatment uses a CBT model.
In Summary
Canvas Health offers basic outpatient programs for both adults and adolescents ensuring age-appropriate treatment models. While clients with a history of relapse or who are in search of intensive substance abuse treatment may require more acute care, CH’s strict adherence to evidence based treatment and individualized treatment planning provide clients with a structured plan tailored for the success of their long-term recovery.
