The Basics
Sober Living Houston is a 12-step based sober living home tailored specifically for men recovering from addiction and substance abuse problems in Houston, Texas. SLH prides itself on providing quality transitional living at a reasonable price with all the services of a traditional treatment center but at 75% less cost.
SLH was founded by Mike Hubacek, himself a recovering addict with over 17 years of sobriety.
Accommodations and Amenities
SLH is a modest one story brick rambler with all the amenities of a luxury sober living house. The six-bedroom house sleeps three clients per room, each with a twin size bed and dresser. All bedrooms have flat screen TVs—additionally there is a 110 inch shared TV in the spacious living room. All TVs have cable, including premium channels, and free wifi is available throughout the house. There are multiple shared computer stations, book and DVD libraries and a video gaming system. For convenience, there is also an on-site laundry facility.
Residents can enjoy the outdoor exercise yard with free weights and a boxing bag, as well as a vegetable garden and party-sized barbecue. Clients can challenge one another at leisure sports with the pool and foosball tables and a fully equipped kitchen is available for residential use, though SLH provides three meals a day.
Transportation services are also available for those who are unable to drive or who don’t have cars, giving them door-to-door access to the nearby shops, malls and restaurants. There are multiple inpatient, outpatient and detox facilities nearby and SLH also liaises clients with contacts in the community to aid in employment services.
Rules and Regulations
While living at SLH, clients must agree to a number of rules and commitments, including mandatory drug tests, daily house meetings, meditation and reading, house chores and gainful employment. Mornings start with an exercise program followed by breakfast, clean up and morning meditation followed by 12-step tutoring and chores. At noon, lunch is served and is followed by clean-up, life skills and an AA meeting. The afternoon continues with chores, independent reading and meditation, followed by dinner, clean-up then down time. In the evenings clients attend one or more AA meetings and then enjoy a fellowship-building outing of some kind—typically coffee or bowling—before lights out.
Extras
SLH arranges planned outings and events like bowling tournaments, softball games, group trips to the city and more.
Residents are connected with off-site specialists for individual and group therapy, family and couples counseling, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), parent groups and intervention services. Further, SLH has staff sobriety coaches who work one-on-one with clients to inspire accountability and peer-based counseling.
In Summary
SLH is a good choice for men transitioning from in- or outpatient treatment into daily sober life. SLH is an environment which fosters fellowship and provides access to recovery help. The structure of the daily schedule assists clients in achieving an all-around understanding of how to live a healthy, sober, independent life upon leaving SLH.
